Perch From My Pond Pics
« on: Dec 31, 2005, 07:05 PM »
Here's a few pics of perch and bluegill from my pond. I caught them the last few days while ice fishing.  Believe it or not the ice has been pretty good but I don't know how long it will last. The 2 largest perch are just under 14 inches.

I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

Thanks guys. Forgot to mention there is a largemouth in the pic. Actually I only eat the smaller fish in the pond. Most of those perch are destined to be shipped to a taxidermy school in Montana on Tuesday. I get $10.00 bucks a piece for the 11 to 12 inch perch and more for larger fish sold to individual taxidermists. It's a niche market I  am exploiting as fish taken out of public waters are illegal to sell. I've shipped frozen fish to taxidermists as far away as Hawaii. Best part is harvest is by hook and line. I have a fish farm in Ohio that sells me 9 inch female perch every year to stock the pond.

If you really want to see a big perch that I caught on a rosey red out of the pond last February. Go to my website at

http://www.ligtel.com/~jjbaird/bairdfish2.htm

It would shatter the state record but won't be allowed due to "unwritten guidelines" and my fish are on a "feeding program." Actually the perch get this big on bass offspring and snails and the bass won't let them feed on the pellets but it really doesn't matter.

Check it out. 16 1/4 inches and 2.81 pounds.

I sometimes take it a step farther. I allow others to fish as long as I am on the property and I have an order to fill. The only catch is the fish that are caught are either mine for sale as it is a business, or if the angler wants to I will mount a big one for them at whatever the going rate is.

I may have mounted a bluegill for him? If so did he catch it on Fortune Lakes in the UP? My dad retired from United Telephone in Lagrange.  I seem to recall someone he worked with named Vaughn. But it may not be the same one.

Yes she has eggs. In case you didn't know the females have up to 30 percent of their body weight in eggs. The closer to spawning time, the more blown up they get. She was caught last February and I was told by my perch supplier (where I get fish to stock the pond) if I would have waited until March or April just before she dropped her eggs she could have easily weighed 3 lbs.  :o

Females are the largest and fastest growing of the two sexes too.

I typically catch them on crappie size minnows (fatheads) but the day I got the two bigger ones (see pic with ice scoop) I was out of minnows and to lazy to drive a 20 mile round trip to get some. I was just using small panfish jigs baited with one or two beemoths (waxworms). Fishing close to the bottom just above the chara (skunk weed) which sticks up about a foot. Both the bluegills and perch in this pond hit after you jig the bait and leave it stationary. What's different about this pond is the smallest bluegill are found in the deepest water down in the chara due to a lack of emergent weeds. I believe along with the lmb offspring and snails the perch feed on them too. (With 300 feed trained bass in the pond I get virtually no recruitment of bass due to the perch and bass feeding on the offspring which is what I want)

Couldn't see them as I don't have a camera and I can only see down about 6 feet before the jig disappears due to the greenish water. A couple of years ago I was getting the biggest perch on the largest shiners I could find set below a tip up. The perch were more aggressive then the largemouths in the pond believe it or not. However, Iam presently growing out about 300 largemouths in the pond that run about 14 inches and I don't want them being deep hooked where I have to keep them. Need to get them a couple of inches larger before sale which won't be until next fall.

Yes you can fish my ponds and I don't charge anyone to fish them. However, there are two catches. (no pun intended) The fish belong to me (I sell them to other taxidermists, taxidermy schools, and fish replica makers) unless you catch one you want to have mounted then you pay the going rate. One more thing I have to be here also.

I contact folks when I have an order to fill but I do have a waiting list. Sometimes I actually have time to fill the order myself.

Right now the ice sucks. It was O.K. a few days ago but it's going down hill fast. It's really deteriorating. Open water in some places. Ice is down to about 2 inches where I checked -- who know in other places. I'd be afraid to let anyone on now.

Send my your phone number via PM and I can call you when I have an order to fill.

No big ones and I hope the bass eat them to oblivion. I love crappies but they can be a disaster in small ponds. Tend to stunt in small ponds and I couldn't keep them on the pellets. I would need a separate pond for crappies. The ones I have caught seem malnourished.
