Quick Strike
« on: Dec 31, 2005, 03:53 PM »
Never having actually seen a quick strike rig, I tried making what I think is close.  I used 4' of 40 lb. fluorocarbon, the front hook is a Gamakatsu #2 octopus with heat-shrink tubing to help hold it in place, and a Gamakatsu #6 treble in the stern.  So far, I have caught 10 pike up to 6 pounds...all were hooked in the mouth (and in some cases outside the mouth!), no cut-offs (yet!!!!!), and every fish we hooked stayed on the hook.  Quite an improvement over last year.

Any comments from pike pros would be appreciated!

Nice - With all the hits I get on Sabattus I end up losing about half the fish.  This rig should fix that.  One question is it legal to put a treble hook on a tip-up in Maine?

not to steal the your tread Sir Landsalot,
But I was wondering the same thing....in the book is says"single baited hook"
to me that means no trebles...but for a fish that isn't managed by the fish and game would it be ok??
As far that I know most ice fisherman that fish for pike uses tebles...

I wasn't concerned about treble still one hook.I was concerned about adding hook above now thats two hooks. You Maine boys can probably get away with that second hook but I'm from out of state they would probably put the clamps on me.Let us know if its legal I would like to add a stinger to my set up.Looks fine to me I would have used two trebles in the red.

Can anyone clarify this?

i have inquired about this before and was told if the hooks go into the same bait it is ok. if you have hooks baited seperately it is illegal.

Billditrite is correct.  If the lure/bait is intended to catch one fish at a time, it's legal.  If you look at the night fishing law for smelt..S-3.. that set up is intended to catch up to three fish per line.

good looking rig, flouro is tough stuff            "teh Gator"

I'll try to post a pic of mine....no tyger line.....just regular old leaders like you would use for bluefish.....then I customize them....that is the key ;)  I'll post a pic or 2 if Mike will let me ;D

We ran a little test on Monday while pike fishing.  Unfortunately the fishing wasn't as hot as Sunday, but we had 15 traps - 5 with flouro, 5 with heavy steel and 5 with a lighter steel leader.  The flouro got bit off 1 time and hooked/landed a 26 icher, the light steel got a nice 12 pounder/35 incher and the heavy steel never popped a flag.  I'm going to keep trying this test this year to see exactly how leader shy they are.

Quick strike rigs are legal in Maine - 1 bait per line, but that bait can have 2 hooks in it.

BTW: my neighbor got a 19.6 and a 14 pounder this weekend too.  I'll post a photo later.

Quick strike rigs are legal in Maine - 1 bait per line, but that bait can have 2 hooks in it.  i asked a warden on sunday, he said only one hook didn't matter if they are in the same bait or not.

your'e asking for some serious heartbreak using anything but steel leaders.the first time i went i brought 80# mono and one cut it no problem, and of course you never know just how big the ones are that get away. :'(.........p.s. be careful of that front hook on the edge of the ice as the fish gets near the hole.
