Lead alternative for split shot?
« on: Dec 13, 2014, 11:30 AM »
I've been using tin split shot on my tip ups but was wondering if anyone has found a better alternative. I've only seen tungsten as a slip weight, I am assuming because it would be to hard to crimp onto line to make split shot with it.

Bismuth and Tin, not as heavy, but they work as split shot...

There a lot harder to bite on the line compared to the old split shots, I had to use pliers to pinch them on, I almost broke a tooth trying to bite them on the line but if there better for the environment thats fine with me

Better not to put the lead in our mouths anyways... Hate to think how much I have bitten down on over the years... Pounds and pounds...

You could try a small steel or brass bullet weight.

I tried some tungsten bullet/slip style last year and they were heavy for their size which is nice but having to cut off the hook and retie if you want to add or reduce weight is what I don't like.
