6x8 hardside build
« on: Dec 08, 2014, 08:29 PM »
Im in the process of my first hardside build..it is an old popup camper tore down to its frame and built from frame up. I have the entire exterior done to the way I want. rubber roofing, osb sheeted walls and aluminum roll flashing (hunter green) from menards as siding.  I used 2x2 lumber for the studs and 1x3 lumber for the trim that is painted brown.  I have the interior started, the walls are insulated with 1.5" styro and the floor with 1" styro.  My next step is to sheet the interior walls.  Im leaning towards lauan, either 1/8 or 1/4. Im thinking some sort of berber carpet or indoor/outdoor carpet for the floor.  One bench across the back wall with two holes in front of the bench.  The bench big enough to sleep on and possibly another fold down bunk above it.  I havent decided what to use for heat yet.  I did install two vents and the windows open as well so, a propane heater is an option.  Any ideas???? Here are the pics I took along the way:

Great looking build so far! Are you planning on getting it out this season? I'm guessing you have pretty good ice up there already.

You'll want to cut some 1/4' plywood or cheap paneling to wrap around it once you hit the ice. I did that to the first one I built years ago & had no draft thru the holes.  ;)

Good job so far.

But you better start running some weight calcs.
The tires, wheel bearings, axles and springs on most small tent campers are only good for like 1000-1500 pounds.

Years back I added a cover to my snowmobile trailer.
And also some tools, 4 full gas cans, floor jack, tools, etc.
Kept blowing tires.
A buddy of mine suggested I go weigh it at a local truck stop.
The tires were not good for what the thing weighed.
Went to DUNN Tire and got 2 new tires in the next weight rating and solved the problem.

Again, great job!!

Attack makes a good point about the weight, if you keep the original tires and wheels at least make sure you keep them fully inflated and the bearings greased. Don't want to blow a tire or bearing on your way!

Good luck on the ice!

Kept blowing tires.

Out on the highway, in the middle of winter, with below freezing temps, and one time it was below zero with semis screaming by me about 6-8' away blowing salt and snow up my a$$.
I learned the hard way.

Trust me.

or not.
 ;)
