Decoy line

What do you guys use for fake decoys? I've all ways used 8 or 10 pound mono but sometimes worry about losing my decoy.

I have an old level-wind reel loaded with 30-40 lb. mono. Decoy can run if fish takes it. I never rig decoy to a solid point. Never seems to spook the fish and no worries about losing my decoy. If your worried about visibility to the fish, you could use some fluorocarbon leader material in the above mentioned weights. Some guys run a 6'-8' (fluoro) leader attached to a braided line for their decoy rigs.

I use the same setup for fake decoys as on my tip ups with no issues.  30 lb tip up line with a 12" leader.

It is unbelievable how hard a decoy can get hammered.

Spooled an old level wind reel with some white Fire Wire.  Not sure what pound test it was as it was off a reel I haven't used in awhile.  Seems like it's around 10 lb test though.

I used to use a Mono in the 20 pound offering and had good luck. The only thing I noticed was that if you slid your fingers down the string at all it made a squeaky sound that spooked the heck out of everything in the hole.

I use 15 to 20 lb Fluorocarbon leader and have braid for backer on my shanty spool.  Same setup for .y tipups. I just check the line with my fingers for abrasions after every battle and replace as necessary.
You may call me crazy, but crazy catches fish!
