Snow isn't good when it weighs down new ice. So its good new that Thanksgiving snow will land on open water. It might even chill the water in preparation for a forecast entire week of freezing but snowless days. My plans to get on the ice during the first week of December are on again I just ordered a new pair of Trekker diamond creepers because the first ice is going to be clear and glassy. I don't intend to fall down and hurt my new tungsten/titanium knee just as another long season begins. Happy Turkey DayDick
Last year I followed up on two north country reports of 4 inches + and found a bare 2"?? When I found 3" in the Mountains I read reports of 5 to 6 inches
As I had hoped the Thanksgiving snow either disappeared into open water or created 2" of floating slush. At noon today my local trout pond was covered with one and half inch of hard ice. Its too much ice to lose to a little freezing rain forecast for Wed. The rain might even provide a little surface water to freeze at 27 degrees Wed. night. My scientific calculations forecast that we might have three and a half inches of hard ice by Sunday. That's still one half inch less than my 240 lb. bulk requires for safety. On Fri. I hope to get out far enough to chisel a big chunk for a scaled measurement. I don't think anyone listened but last season I asked anyone reporting "safe ice" (3 - 4 inches) to send a photo with ruler at ice. Last year I followed up on two north country reports of 4 inches + and found a bare 2"?? When I found 3" in the Mountains I read reports of 5 to 6 inches in southern NH?? Some people believe eveyrthing they read I think this is it this time??Dick
