My first ice 2014-15: Kokanee

I couldn't wait any longer, so I headed West for my first ice fix of the season.  The location isn't secret, it's a well known kokanee spot for early ice.  Ice was 4-5 inches, with a layer of white ice on top.  Got to the spot around 6am, and it was COLD -- ice was loud and growing nicely.  Man, it felt great using the flasher again.  Non-stop action on anything pink tipped with raw shrimp -- favorite of the day was a glow pink/white ratfinkee.  Caught my limit in a few hours, then practiced using a PK flutter fish.  Still need more work at it for sure.  A beautiful Colorado day for first ice!

Thanks, guys - it was really nice getting on the ice finally.  If any of you are going this week, plan on getting there early to get a spot, like right at sunup. Plenty of fish to go around, but the bite really died down around 11:30am.

Good job! A couple of them look a decent size. Do you cook 'em just like trout or put them in the smoker? Never eaten a Koke yet, wonder how they are?

Thanks, Johnny -- last year, I cooked them like trout and they were tasty.  I think it's because they're not too far past spawning at this point of the season.  This year, I'm planning to smoke them to see how that compares.

We got ours last year in late December.  They were quite good.  Fried some, grilled some.  No quality issues... All reds.
