Is there a plowed road out to some spots in front of tobin lake resort?

Yup.  Plowed out to the hump, the resort point and over to serenity bay.

It was 41" and had a large girth, the fish weighed approximately 21 lbs. Big K.

Am I safe to assume there will be enough snow by Friday to still bring the sled to get around the flats?

Where does a guy get on to fish the flats?  Do we head to the dam and drive on or is there a road somewhere else?

Any reports on ice at the flats or anywhere on Tobin really?  Hoping to drive truck on ice this weekend.
I'd rather be fishing then working. So I'm fishing.

there is a road plowed onto lake, that is easy travelling. it is straight east of tobin lake resort and you enter on the west side of tobin lake to access the flats. as of last weekend you needed a snowmobile to access the lake anywhere off the trail. i'm not sure with the heat if the snow will settle enough to drive anywhere on the lake?? it would be a smart idea to bring a powerful quad or snowmobile if u plan on heading off trail !! fishing was not to bad...our group of 6 did pretty decent with the biggest measuring 39" and a few more in that 36"-38" and most were in that 10 lb range. more fish caught than years ago, but not nearly the size we used to catch. IF U USE THE LAKE ROAD, PICK UP YOUR GARBAGE!! it is disgusting to know that so many people leave trash behind...respect the lake!! and follow the regulations and clean up after yourself. good luck to all

New to the forum and i really enjoyed reading all the info and tips people have posted, believe me i have been reading for the last few days haha. I have read pretty much everything i can on places to catch burbot at Tobin and would really appreciate a tip on where they spawn in Tobin. I caught a few nice ones at the hump but have not had luck recently. My dad says they used to catch them at the flats but i want to plan an outing this weekend and any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. it is my first year fishing Tobin in the winter and have had pretty good success, i must say i am kinda hooked on catching those burbot but most i have caught was 2 in a day. I dont need exact spots since i understand that no one would want to give that up but an area and depth and bottom features they prefer would be really doing me a slice, thanks to all and good luck to everyone

I can't tell you were the spawn etc but I've caught them at both prudens point and carrols cove in the deeper water. I caught a nice 6-7lber 2 weekends ago on a tip up. I have not caught them in bunches though. All I can suggest is try deeper water. Hopefully someone will be able to help you out with more details.

Thanks MDC, i will keep drilling holes and if i get lucky i will post some pics, there must be a secret to catching/finding them and i am kind of stubborn but its a newer species for me and a hard one to find info on

not sure about tobin, but look for shallower sandy flats close to deeper water.  fish well into dark but this time of year they'll bite all day.

when youre looking for burbot look to where you find walleye! the burbot like the same habitat that walleye do and the same fishing method will catch both. make sure you let your bait sit still between jigs as burbot definitely like a static bait.

Perfect! That sounds like a good starting point, i will be in the flats area so i will try to find the old riverbed i heard of. Seems like a logical place to start, thanks everyone, every clue and tip is very appreciated

Just a quick question for those of you that fish the flats often. I've been out there twice this year and going again tomorrow. We are trying to target big pike but we haven't had any luck at all. We have been fishing in 8 ft of water but I was wondering if anyone's had better luck in deeper water. Not asking for anyone's honey holes lol just trying to find a target depth. Thanks!

I will be out there tomorrow MDC, we got into a few nice ones this week and i could show you the spot we were catching them, we got 6 in about an hour, biggest we landed was 15 lbs and lost a couple i am guessing were in the 20's. I drive a silver dodge diesel and ill be out there before lunch sometime.

Without counting ice we were in roughly 4 feet of water, we used to go there years ago and we would catch them even shallower than that. I would say try shallower and it seems early morning and right before dark were our best times, good luck MDC maybe we will cross paths

My dad pulled out a 13lb burbot on the flats in Feb '13 iirc.
We were in 4-6 fow, right beside the old river channel where it dropped to 20fow.
Only burbot that day, but we wernt fishing for them.

Thanks guys I appreciate the advice. Perhaps I'll see you out there skfisher! If you see a blue Chevy stuck out there somewhere it's probably me ha ha. I hear it's getting pretty wet out there so we will see how it goes.

Well i didnt see a stuck blue chevy haha hope you had good luck MDC. It was a good day for me, caught 2 around 40" and between 20-25 pounds, a 12 lber, and 3 around 7-9 lbs. Getting real wet out there on the trail, anyone who goes be careful, its getting a bit smelly in some spots so i am guessing the ice is starting to rot

I did not get stuck lol but I sure wish I would of came to find you. We've been out a dozen times this year and the biggest anyone's been able to catch is a 12lber. We did awful yesterday.. We even found a spot that dips into a river or a ditch and we were only able to ice two 8lbers. Oh well there's always next year. Ya the road out is getting pretty sketchy. Be safe out there!

Same here, i started out by a drop off near where the Petaigan river flows and fished anywhere from 4-16 ft deep and never caught a thing, made a move to a shallow flat and go into them right away, def had luck on my side. With how the road is that will be my last trip for the year, good luck on your open water season. I cant wait for my spring sturgeon fishing expeditions!

You'll be good to go. I know we've had a week of warm weather but it's still freezing over night. My shack is still out at prudens till the weekend. Can't see it being an issue. The road out at the flats was getting sketchy on the weekend but I can't see it being an issue getting out there. Couple years back the snow was mostly gone off the ice and we were driving on. Honestly I wouldn't worry to much.

The rumour has been circulating, the fish was in fact just under 37 lbs. which means it didn't get stretched in size but was caught in Feb. of 2009, just within an hour and a couple hundreds of my friend who also caught a monster that tipped the scales at 37 lbs. 5ozs. New or old it's always exciting to see a monster Pike!!
