Unusual tip-up bait.
« on: Jul 29, 2014, 08:49 AM »
I'm thinking about using typically summer live bait on tip-ups. Some ideas are live crayfish, live frogs. Anyone have experience?

I've seen crawdads and frogs under the ice so it cant hurt to try , when fishing gators I still prefer 1/2  a hot dog on a red treble hook

Always wondered what'd happen if I threw a senko, or a bass plastic down there.

I could see using a plastic bait scented or unscented on a windlass or other jigging type tip up .Think sometime back guys were stating they used cooked rice to mimic waxes or spikes but that's more of a jigging technique I suppose. I've heard about guys using salt soaked chamois cloth cut in strip.... even bacon ..think mostly its the saltiness that saturates the water drawing in the fish.

I have caught a few bass through the ice on 3" senkos, tried the 4" a few times. I have also caught bass on 3" & 4" gulp minnows through the ice. When I tried them on the tip ups I had flags but they wouldnt get hooked or run with them like when your using live minnows. This was all in a highly populated bass pond tho.

I read somewhere maybe on this site even about guys catching fish (I think lakers) that had plastics in them I guess they dont break down in there stomach, the wierdest thing I ever used was chicken skin cut in very small strips and it worked to
