Greg,  I've been using clear nylon sewing thread on 2 of my softer rods.  I love it!  Very little memory, small diameter for those really small hook eyes and very tough line.  Best part...300 yds. for $1.87 at Walmart.  I've landed many large crappie and a few 2 lb bass.  I like it!

Greg2ha,

I am sure Gander Mountain has it.  If not, Bait & Hook on Winchester Rd.  I have done the 1 lb thing before and it did not work out well (lost bigger fish due to line break).  My system now revolves abound using 2 lb Berkley Vanish with fire line as my main line or just straight Vanish or P-line Fluoroice.  The advantage with fluorocarbon is its near invisible under water, yet you still have 2 lb test strength, not 1 lb.  Much safer when you put the steel to a big redear or crappie...  <><  <><  <><

I would be surprised if Gander has it.  Usually it sells out very fast.  I like PLine Flouorice 2# myself or 2# flourocarbon

I went to Gander Mnt., Meijer, Dick's and tried calling Old Fort Tackle
and she went out of business. I did find some at Meijer on Illinois Rd.
Hey Bret, I heard of people doing that with thread. You say it is just clear thread and they have it at WalMart? You guys might think it's
crazy but I fished with a guy last Sunday and he killed right next to
me with same bait and lures and everything. I'm a believer!

Greg2ha,

I would put fluorocarbon up against that thread any day of the week.  I just don't see how thread (which is not made for fishing) can be better than line made specifically for ice fishing...I have all the confidence in the world in fluorocarbon and that mentality gives me a mental edge.  <><  <><  <><

We have Trilene Micro Ice in 1lb, HT Adams Black Ice in 1.7lb, and P-Line Floroice in 2lb.
All are currently in stock at the Sportsman's Lodge in Decatur IN, which is just south of Fort Wayne.

Greg,  I bought mine in the craft/fabric area at Walmart.

Iceman,  I know nothing about florocarbon but i suspect your right.  Things have changed since I last ice fished in the early 80's.  I read about the thread in an ice fishing book and thought I would try it last season.  I set the hook on a good fish tonight...i'm guessing 3 lbs or so.  The line was rubbing all around the bottom of the whole, and the fish was fighting quite hard and the line never broke.  I did lose the fish though.  I am very impressed with it for panfishing.
