« on: Dec 21, 2005, 04:40 PM »
I see that alot of people are making stands to set there shanty on and drag them , they make them out of electrical conduit , usally 1/2 in tubing , I have a two man HT Polar Ecape Magnum , and it is very heavy , especially when I got my stuff in it , and when I am dragging it on the snow its a real bear !!!, does anyone have any pictures of one they made or is there any posts that show how to make one , thanks for any help

I have used one for years. Conduit sled. Mine is 20" tall so can put buckets and stuff under it in the pick-up and will run in deep snow. No pic...Will take one on mon "on the ice"  We have loaded it with alot of stuff (including a second shack and stuff) and pulled it with a 4 wheeler. No problem!! Welded-light-strong.

Mac,
I have to disagree with you on this one.  I think a 4 wheeler or snow mobile is hands down the easiest.  The reason I think this is because you will not have to listen to the wheeler or sled piss and moan that its legs are tired on the ride home.

Mac, normally you are right on, but with my two sons, 10 and 13, when i give them a sled or something to pull, they immediately are riding it down any incline they can find, ice gear strewn about....but i guess those are some of the good times they'll remember.  And they wonder why dad carries the minnies......

I have a Frabill Ranger Solo and added a couple of emt conduit "transport runners" to ease the work out to the fishing grounds.

Here's a link to a earlier post...

sounds like youve raised some good boys there, Mac.  Im 45 and still fish with my dad all the time. I rarely go out with out him. And my two guys love to ice fish, so we have 3 generations out there fighting for flags....talk about fun.  Sometimes i look at my dad and i can only imagine how much he is smiling on the inside.

FISHON,  If you don't want to go the stand route, try P-Tex.  It's the plastic stuff cutting boards are made from and are slicker than snot.  Place a couple strips under the shack for easier pulling.  Otherwise, the conduit sled idea is much better! ;)

I like the conduit idea.  But for now the local lakes have no snow on them so I could put my truck inside my portable and pull it without any problems.  I'm thinking about rigging up a sail... hhhmmmmm.

That reminds me of the Pat McManus story on ice fishing with Retch Sweeney.  I have only the barest recollection of it.  Has anyone read Pat?  Do you remember which book that story is in.  I'd love to give it another read.

I have found the "Hands Down" best way to make pulling your sled easier.
I now have my son do it for me.
Mac

LOL - that's just awesome!  I'm a young buck... no children and don't plan on having any that old for quite some time... I guess I'm stuck pulling it myself or my Chevy is for now when the ice is thick enough ;).

i installed runners on my fish trap and  give it a good coat of car wax once in a while to make it pull easier.  I also bring as little as possible to decrease the weight.  I have to pull by hand so every ounce counts!    J

I picked up a couple of sets of downhill ski's at a yardsale for 5 bucks.  They work better than anything of the other runners I've tried.
Are you SURE it's safe to walk on? Looks questionable to me!

I also heard that silicone spray works well.  Haven't tried it yet though.

I pull my portable with a four wheeler and I'm nice enough to let my son drill the holes. In exchange for this he gets to fish in a warm shelter.
