excuse my ignorance but...
« on: Feb 26, 2014, 04:13 AM »
what is winter blend gas? I just purchased my first gas auger and the instruction manual says to use winter blend. Do I just use pump gas and add some stabalizer?

Its what the refineries add in the winter months. So it is already done if you just bought the gas.

Your Auger will like you more if you can find Ethanol free gas. Use A good Oil at 50:1 Mix rate.

MJB, you failed to say what type of auger you purchased. The answered required is much different for a 2cycle than a 4cycle. If it's a 2cycle, a 2cycle oil must be mixed with any gas you buy. 4 cycle engine is just add gas. Gas containing no ethanol is much more important for a 2 cycle than it is for a 4cycle engine. Most gas augers you buy are 2 cycle, but not all of them are.
It's more important to be nice, than it is nice to be important.

No problem Eddie  ;D

Keep in mind that unless a station offers a designated pump, the first gas out of the hose will be whatever the person before you pumped.

When I run into that I always put the first gallon in my truck and then fill my can.

Got to love ethanol gas kills gas mileage in most cars/trucks gunks up augers and mowers. Ethanol tends to carry a lot more water content in it than regular gas due to the corn process. So if your stuck with ethanol only gas get a bottle of iso-heat in the yellow bottle(sold at most gas stations)  (takes water out of the gas)  and you will be OK.

Ahhhhhhh fuel talk!

You guys got me wondering so I looked at the MSDS sheets for Heet and Thermo aid.  Know what I found?

Heet - 99% Isopropyl Alcohol, 1% "proprietary additive"

Thermo aid - 100% Isopropyl Alcohol

No need to add additional alcohol to a 10% Ethanol blend.  None of this stuff actually "takes the water out of the fuel".  It hold the water in suspension so that it can be run through the engine.

and to the OP

A winter blend fuel has a higher Reed Vapor Pressure (RVP).  What that means is that it evaporates easier at a lower temperature.  This makes the engine easier to start in cold weather.  No need to go track it down.  Just purchase fresh fuel from the pump this time of year and you'll have yourself some "winter blend."

If the auger starts running rough it's because the gas has a bit of water in it and water sinks to the bottom and blocks off the gravity feed into the carb. The more you prime the tank for pressure the better chance that water goes to the fuel line. To fix either pull the clear plastic hose off the tank and drain it a little or the easier way just put some iso-heat in it while you make your gas mix. Fresh fuel or not ethanol sucks!

isn't adding heat to non oxy gas the same as using oxy gas!

Pretty much.  Except it's a different type of alcohol.
