Best lake in Wyoming for trophy browntrout?
« on: Feb 09, 2014, 09:15 PM »
Just curious if anyone has any opinions on the best lakes (I know there are a few good rivers) to catch a 10-15+lb brown trout out of?

My guess would be Alcova, Pathfinder, Seminoe... Hattie, the Gorge maybe?  It has been a long time since I've heard of a good brown out of there.  Fontenelle is another one that I'm sure they are at.

Is Soda the lake up near Pinedale?  I had heard it was a great place for pig browns but I also heard there was water quality issues there too as of late, did it get really low?.  Have you fished there recently?

Yes it's near pinedale. A few years (8 years or so) back a LOT of fish died in there. It took the numbers down to 15% of what they were. It used to be you could go out there and catch a bunch of 4-6 pounders but now if you catch more than a couple in a day you are doing good. They are good fish though usually 5 pounds +. I've seen many in the 8 pound range. I caught one two years ago that was 29 3/4" and just shy of 11 pounds.

Awesome.

Thanks for sharing I appreciate it.   I think my biggest is probably only 24-25".  I've caught a lot of 22-23" class fish.

Season is closed October 1- May 9.  They used to close it at the end of September to net brood fish to spawn, plus it is right next to an elk feed ground!

There are not many fish left, but like Ryan said, there are some real hogs now....

Don't forget about Lake DeSmet. We routinely find brown trout from 8 to 12 lbs in our sampling gear. The biggest I've seen is 16 lbs. The North dam seems to produce the most numbers, but we find browns spread throughout the entire lake.

I hadn't fished  Soda  for a few years  but had  caught a lot of nice brooks and browns there  years ago. Last time  I was there  we got skunked! I couldn't believe it. Hopefully it can come back. With the one fish limit it has lost its popularity. Salt river has some good browns and pretty good access for fishing.

Some dandy Browns in both Palisades Res and Jacksonlake. I don't know if they hit 10#s in Jackson, but no question in my mind about Palisades. Gorge still holds a few, but it is a big reservoir and they are not just everywhere...caught a 13# 6 oz hen 3 years ago. Oh-- Sulphur Creek used to have some good ones as well.

How about the North Platte below Grey Reef?  Used be both giant rainbows and browns there.  I know the fly fishermen still pack the area.  Either wading or drift boats.  And the river right below Alcova has given up  some double digit fish.  I have not fished it in many years.  But last September I camped near Grey Reef and saw a lot of fishermen.  I even saw a picture of a 10 lb walleye caught there.

Brother caught a decent 24 inch brown out of Fontenelle this summer followed by a 20 plus cutthroat. Decent lake.

Don't over look desmet. I know people who have caught 10 15 pound browns out of there. But there are a lot of nice 20-30" abundantly in there. I tend to get one or two each time over 24"

I caught a nice 6 lb brown out of De Smet last year at the lions club derby. There is definitely bigger in there though.

There is a decent lake for big browns near Douglas, not sure of the name though. Heard of some mid to high 20 inchers coming out of there.

Wheatland#3 holds some trophies, just not the numbers it used to.
Fishing is not about life or death, it is much more important than that! And all I have to say is FISH ON baby.

That's a good question. I have fished all over the state and depending on the time of year, they all produce nice browns.
