Ice rod storage
« on: Jan 20, 2014, 07:39 PM »

What do you guys transport/store your ice rods in?
I have seen the rod cases from Otterbox and Frabill, but don't really want to pay $65-$95 for a plastic case.
That being said, the soft cases don't really do anything for me.
What do you guys use?

or you could use a section of pvc with a glue cap on one end and a cleanout plug w/ adapter on the other, depending on how many rods you carry.

well you could always carry around a section of 12 sdr, a little lighter. haha. no probally an old gun or bow case would work just fine.

I paid $129 for my ice fishing innovations rod case. All my rods are custom built so the protection was a must. Comes with 4 tackle boxes inside it as well. U can tie a rope to it and drag it across the ice, you can run the thing over with a truck. I had way more invested in rods than the case. Very great investment. U would have to drop it off a cliff to disturb the rods. Holds 6 combos and a ton of tackle. Icefishinginnovations. com

I bought a Frabil hard side this year, so far it's been through some pretty good abuse. I get 6 rods in it. Finally don't have to worry about my rods bouncing around in the sled.

Got 12 of these for $20, works great to keep them tangle free in the back pack I carry them in.

I bought a Plano gun case from walmart this year

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Plano-Gun-Guard-All-Weather-42-Tactical-Case-Black/20893846

I have the long perch assault rods and they fit in here with the reels attached!

I never broke a rod before but I figured I would eventually unless I bought a case... First day with the case...I closed the tip of my favorite rod in it and it snapped like a twig....ohh the irony!

This is a very good case though and I found mine right after hunting season on sale for $35.00!

I just bought the Clam soft sided case and have been happy with the purchase.  It easily holds my six rods without folding the reel handles in.  Also holds 2-3 tip ups (depending in style) and a couple tackle boxes.  The frame is aluminum so there is some protection.

I use a 5 gal. Bucket with a fabric tool caddy that goes around the rim from Home Depot.  The rods go in the side pockets with rod covers from Cabelas.

I replaced all my sprinklers last year so I kept the tube portion of the little pop-up sprinklers and attached them with screws around my sled.  The pole handles fit perfectly in those. :)

I'm pretty weight conscious since I hoof it on the ice so I use a soft case. You can customize a variety of soft and hard cases with foam inserts modified to fit your gear.
YOU are the only one who can decide if the ice is safe enough for you.

I use a 5 gal. bucket with pvc pipe attached to the sides using either bolts or rivets. These buckets hold 10 rods, but my personal bucket is set up for 6 rods. Might not be the best for longer one piece rods, but it works for me. I carry  a variety of poles, 1-2 small, telescopic and/or 2-piece rods that I break down. All fit in the bucket in my sled and slide under my topper door.  Additional pipe could be added for a skimmer, fillet knife, gaff, pliers.....

Thanks.  Outside also works good!  At one time, I had the pipe on both the inside and outside.  It seems like I make modifications to mine all the time. I went strictly to the inside after I bought a 'Jet Sled'. The only reason being is keeping the reels out of the way and the bucket fits better in the sled with all the other gear.

Hard sided plastic arrow cases work well for smaller rods, and don't take up much room. I have to fold in the reel handles to fit mine, but it's nice to use the same gear hunting and ice fishing-easier to justify new gear to the Mrs...

Thanks guys-
Lots of good ideas.
This is why this site is great!
I might try and make some sort of hard case myself.
I saw the Frabill case in person yesterday.  For $60, the only way I would own that is if it were a gift.
Not worth the $ in my opinion.

Been trying to remember to post the link to a guy on eBay who makes and sells wooden rod cases.  Nothing fancy but some nice ideas if you have the tools and space for a DIY project.

LMAO!  I catch my fair share of fish of my $20 poles...my HT rod and reel was bought 10 years ago and still smooth. Does a more expensive combo catch more fish?

We use Cabelas 6 rod case.  It holds the rods without folding the reels in.  We also use the tip-up roll up cases.  Great for the sleds and don’t get beat up.  The rod case was just on sale for $19.99 but normally run $27.99.  Well worth it.
