cusk tips on champlain
« on: Jan 12, 2014, 01:26 PM »
anyone got any tips for trying to get cusk on Champlain? I tried a little bit last year when i was up there but didn't have a lot of success.. i was just using cut bait laying on the bottom.. any recommendations appreciated.. We primarily fish for pike while up there but would like to try to get one.. not sure if they would typically be in pikey areas.. although i know we did see one guy with one from the same area we were fishing last year.

THanks!

Just go to Tabors point and put some bait on the bottom at night and you will get them. Stay close to deeper water.

You don't have to go deep, in the evening, after dark.  I caught two, in about 4 feet of water, in Northern Lake Champlain, on Tip-ups.  Good Luck.

Would I have a better chance catching one on willoughby or at tabors point? It's my goal to catch one this year too.

They are pretty easy to catch in Willoughby, just go straight out in front of the boating access in 30-40ft of water. Make sure your bait is right on the bottom, one trick is to step on your bait so the guts are coming out, for whatever reason they seem to like them better.

I have always had luck on gravel or sandy areas.  Hit a state park beach area and  you should have luck.  I have caught them on Seymour, Magog and Champain.  This time of the year try might be deeper but I have caught plenty in less then 10 ft of water.
