Wamplers/Midwest Open Local knowledge
« on: Jan 10, 2014, 07:45 AM »
We were fortunate enough to get drawn for the Midwest Open.  I don't know if we necessarily deserved to be drawn but we were certainly lucky enough.  I feel bad for the guys who have fished it in the past and are now unable to get in.  With that being said, we could certainly use a little local knowledge and tips on the lake.  Please shoot me a PM if you are willing to help.

Thanks in advance.

Joe

I'm in the same boat 3rd year in the Tourney, never stepped foot on this lake though. I am more else looking to get some ice and snow reports, wondering if people are able to get around on 4x4 quads out there or is the slush and snow to much. My area is destroyed by snow and slush. Any help would be great I don't expect anyone to give up there spots, just some general info on the lake and the conditions and if there's any areas to avoid.

Thank you,
And good luck if your in!

What's the lake conditions like, I heard you have had a lot of snow lately, just wondering if its effecting the ice at all? Can a four wheeler still get around out there?

Wonder if they'll have to change lakes with all this slush?   :o

I'm not looking to steel your spot or anything, I can find fish on my own. I was just hoping you guys could just give a ice report. I don't think being a helpful sportsman's to much to ask. I don't blame you for not giving details on the like, but givng ice and slush conditions and letting people know that quads can of cant move around on the lake in no way will hinder anyone's chances of winning. Hell might even get you a beer if we run into you.

I am leaving now to check the lake out, I don't have a problem at all giving out usefull info, I'd take that beer if its not against the rules. Anyhow have only ice fished Wamplers a handful of times after perch, did catch a few small gills. My previous post about not givin info meant only where I plan on fishin not anything about conditions, ice conditions I will try to accurately pass along.

Wamplers lake has 6 to 8 inches slush on top of 8 plus inches of ice. The ice has lots of air bubbles in it and is spongy, my opinion. The auger had a difficult time cutting wanted to stick to the hole, blades were ok last time out, so I believe its the quality of ice causing it. On that note the slush and ice seemed dirty, have extra blades or extra auger with ya if you plan on hole hopping! There was only one old permy hole marked with branches I saw, if the branches weren't there you would never know, don't know if there are anymore, was 3 permys still out. About a dozen people fishing, saw 4 quads, they had keep the speed up to get thru. went old school two rods auger and bucket 1/2 hour time pulled in two dink perch and one gill.

Funny thing first 4 holes the water sat on top of the ice, 10 feet away a hole as I went to skim the slush it went down the hole and like a toilet, water went clockwise into the hole and lots of it fast enough it felt like bites on my line.

Man o man that looks like a head ache just waiting to happen. What's the chances they will switch it over to Devils or Clark?

I can only assume Clark and Devils have the same scenario.

When I left work yesterday Devils looked like a slop hole, and that was before the rain. I'd imagine it's a mess just like the rest of the lakes in the area.   :'(

Delta9, great report thank you! It looks rough, I guess its about the same here. Hopefully two weeks is enough to fix some of that, there's a few really cold nights ahead we should be fine out there. If you make out over the next few weeks please report back. We are hopefully coming down on the 21st. Maybe we will run into ya! Tanks again.

Any new reports on the ice and slush out there? Seems around here the last few nights have helped firm that top layer up a little.

It should be OK for the tournament. I don't think it will get switched.

Wow, you guys are very decorated fisherman. Are you fishing the tournament? WYFRABILL and I are the lucky Wyoming team entered in the tournament. We have never fished an event of this size before. We are looking forward to the trip out there. We will start fishing Wamplers on Wednesday morning and every morning until the tournament. What lakes nearby would you suggest fishing in the afternoons?

We are staying in Onsted. I would say we want to fish for about anything besides trout. Wyoming has way too many trout. We usually fish for perch and walleye out here.
