Ice Reactions and Safety question ??
« on: Jan 08, 2014, 07:21 PM »
I went on a new pond today at Sanchris SP. It was very shallow not over 2 foot deep and never got a bite so I think there was a serious summer kill.

My question is; will our ice start to get thinner under this snow? There was only 3-4" of ice on this pond ( I was expecting thicker ice) and it was very slushy under the 5" of snow. Much of the pond had just slush on the ice and the closer I got to these areas the weeker the ice felt. Will most ponds and lakes get thinner or weaker ice under this snow?

I'm still learning how ice freezes and thaws on ponds and lakes. Thanks for the thoughts.

The snow insulates the ice and it will slow down the ice building process  The ice should not get any thinner unless there are some springs or a long period of warm weather, ether way you should always be cautious of the ice especially early ice. Remember slush and snow add weight.  Tight lines and stay safe.  :icefish:
