What is the closest place to Helena I can fish for Crappie?

I was wondering if anyone had an idea where I could fish for Crappie within a couple hours' drive of Helena?   I have never caught one and they look fun and tasty.  Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!!!

I'd drive the extra distance the other way....more species to target in the same waters. That's a long haul for medi-core crappie fishing, unless your headed that way anyway:)

Thanks for the info! Missoulafish- are you talking about TRR?  I go to whitefish a couple times a year to visit friends. They don't fish and I never have taken that extra day to hit some local spots. There is a slough mentioned that I will have to check out next time I am up there. Are there any crappie in Flathead River?  Thanks!

I was thinking anywhere would be better than the Whitefish or Flathead area. The crappie up there are In quite a few water bodies now ( all illegal introductions) and many are right in the middle of establishing themselves. It can and is real hit and miss. There are several sloughs on the Flathead river that have crappie in them now. There are several other guys on here that can point you to sloughs with a chance to catch a few potatoe chips:)

OK, this isn't close but... I usually pick up some crappies at Nelson not to mention perch, walleye and northern s.

Fresno up by Havre has them also, but I'm not sure about numbers...  I've talked to folks who have done ok open water for them.  They hang in big basins this time of year and tend to suspend so make sure you bring electronics if your looking.

Wadsworth pond in Great Falls has some. Not many, and not huge, but if you just want to cross them off your life list, you can get it done.
