Aqua Vu Micro "Minnesota Rig"
« on: Jan 02, 2014, 08:27 PM »
I didn't know what else to call it.  The Minnesota Rig had a nice ring.

Caught them one after another.  I think this setup would work very well in situations like a tournament (if they are allowed) when every bite counts.

It sure was fun, I know that.

Yeah everyone is worried about downsizing and line twist or what not and these things are inhaling a camera.   ;D

That is awesome. Although, I would be worried about a big fish hitting your jig, and then damaging the camera cable as you bring it in.

Yes that is a bit of a concern, but the cable is rated at 22lbs and also the camera/cable is an easily replaceable component.

I've wanted a camera forever, and now I know exactly which one I want and how I'm gonna use it. Excellent ingenuity. It's nice when things work pretty much exactly as you imagined right?

Yeah since a lot of my ideas end up an epic failure, its nice when one of them works out exactly as a pictured it in my head.    Granted this isn’t going to be practical for most fishing, but when you have finicky biters below you and are wanting to put some fish on the ice, this might be a good advantage, and the best part is no steering problems or finding your jig.  Drop down and its there.     Also, with a simple clip addition you are back to side viewing and it would make a great scouting tool without having to even dismount the camera.  Plus the whole works fits in my rod bag.

Now….if I could just figure out a good system for deployment and winding back up.     What I’m doing now is just pulling off a bunch of slack and letting it coil up on the ice and using it like fly line/rod to bring the fish in

What about running a hard line of say 65# braid with the camera cord attached somehow so the stress is on the hard line and not the camera cord?

Dtro,  that is some great thinking.  As an engineer, I applaud you for your first prototype of the MN rig.  Well done.

yea...... I want one

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

OK, couple thoughts. Send that to Aqua Vu and tell them you should be on their R&D team (read that as free equipment).  That is pure genius. I've always used their regular  cams for "sight fishing" but it occasionally gets tangled. I was wondering how you were handling the cable take up. If I manage to think of anything I'll PM ya. Others have commented on the " bigger fish" issues. I'd call it "your name_rig" you thought of it, take credit!!!

I already have 2 AV cams but now I see I need yet another! LOL

How does that work with the line coming off the spool to the screen like that? My brain is having trouble wrapping around that. If this works, it solves my dilemma.

DT, are you now hand winding it around the spool, or are you able to use the bail?

As you can probably see in the photos, I've removed the handle and bail of the reel.    The reel/spool currently will only be used for cord storage and to ease feeding the camera down the hole.      I will still have to strip the line up by hand and let it coil at my feet for the retrieve while using the pole to fight the fish.   Similar to fly fishing.
