I am no ice expert and I don't even play one on TV
That being said, if I take kids on the ice, I go out before and I drill holes to check. Did that yesterday before I took some of my kids to the ice today. I wear those orange spikes during these proceedings. My advise would be to do something similar, check before you venture out in water deeper than your chest.
Seeing what I saw in the last few days in southern NH - which was 7-8 inches of ice with a nice solid 4" of black ice on the bottom - I would be very surprised if a day of rain ruined it. I plan to fish on the 1st.
