leader question
« on: Dec 07, 2005, 08:15 AM »
I usually use 8 lb mono for the fishing I do; mostly bass and crappie/perch.  Do you guys notice any difference by using florocarbon leaders vs mono?  Just throwing the question out therre; what would YOU use for a leader?  Thanks!

For jigging in waters that are heavily fished, and under very bright conditions (like bright under water too), I don't bother with leaders, I use 4 and 6 flourocarbon as the main line on two of my jigging poles, no mono.  It of course is a few dollars more, but i don't have to bother changing leaders on the ice or have to worry about another knot (weak spot) on my line.    I have found that berkley flourocarbon works the best for this, because it is not too stiff and will not tangle on the reel.  Like a 150 yard spool of 4 pound test is about 7 or 8 dollars max at walmart.  That's plenty of line to equip two or three jigging rods.

I plan on doing the same thing Fergy; just to experiment and see if there is a noticable difference.

Flouro. is definatly the way to go.  I use it spring and fall for my trout poles it is nearly invisible under water.  I noticed more fish every time I used it.  I started using it last year for ice fishing leader and I notice a increase in trout and salmon I was catching I did not catch more bass, perch,or pickeral so I dont think it makes a huge differance on those types of fish.  I use 4lb for trout and salmon,I use 40lb steel leaders for pike and muskie

I use fireline for open water but i never thought of using it for ice. I love it for open water b/c it is so strong and thin. I might try a few different leader set-ups to see which works best.

I usually use a 3 foot leader of mono of 10-12 lb test attached to a barrell swivel and then the weight is attached above the swivel.

For my tipups i have a barrel swivel attached to the main line, then i attach 3-8 foot flourocarbon leader to the swivel.  I have different line weights on different tipups for different fish.

Pickerel tipups : 20lb
Salmon: 20lb
Panfish: 6lb
Trout and bass:  both 6lb and 14lb

Pike :  steel leader 18 inches 30 and 45 pounds

I spool up with standard dacron 30#, tied to a 230# (Size 2) spro power swivel, then lead off with 3 feet of the 30# test seaguar floro.  Ive never had a toothy fish bite though this leader on fresh water.  Im not saying it can't happen but I haven't seen it yet.  I think the trilene knot works the best although it is a pain to tie flouro of this size.  I grab a pair of pliers and "secure it" after the knot is in place.

I  also use 20# flouro at least 3' long so the fish don't get spooked by the heavy green line.

since I mainly fish for Pike, I use 36# seguar fluoro., and although they have ripped it up to where I need to tie a new leader, I have caught up to 15# pike without cutting thru.  Since I use superglue when tying to the hook, I always keep an extra 5-8 extras in ziplocks, in case I need a new leader.  I have noticed a difference when using this vs. steel leaders.
This leader is also about 10 feet, so in most areas, late in the season, the main line is still on the spool.
depending on what I can get for bait, I either use a 2/0 treble, or a smaller size 2 shank.
