Building A Dedicated Fishing Snowmobile
« on: Dec 16, 2013, 06:04 PM »
I just picked up a 98' Polaris Indy  500 with 2500 miles for $600.

I want to build it up as a Dedicated run and gun fishing snowmobile.

I picked up some 1/2" EMT that I would like to fab up some racks for gear and auger.

I should get started later this week on the build. I try to post pics as I go along.

Can't wait to see I would like to get a sled for that cheap myself!  You can't find a sled like that for less than $1500 here in SD.

I know, It was my son's 18th birthday last fri and he has wanted a sled. I guy at work said he had a 97 600xp and was looking to get about $700 to $800 for it. So I went and looked at it. He had the 98 500 setting there by the one that was for sale, so I offered $1200 for the pair and he accept it with out any haggling. Both have covers and spare belts and about 2500 miles. I was happy to say the least. ;D Oh, so is my son!

Ya, I like to know also. Going back to my folks for Christmas in Benson, Mn. Got a week to burn, Bittter is a little over an hour from there. My brothers ice some very impressive perch there last year.

Going to build the racks out of 1/2" black pipe instead of EMT. Found as much as I want for .50 cents a foot. Will be a lot better for welding and still can be bent in a 3/4" EMT bender.

Agreed. I'm looking for the same type of sled and it will also be dedicated to ice fishing. Not a chance I'll get a deal like that though.
Can't wait to see your custom racks! Are you going to mount your auger rack on the front?

Right now I have a jiffy electric auger that I use my trolling motor battery to run. Thinking for the sake of the wires to battery, I will keep it in back. Looking to get a Pro 4 lite in the future, and my thoughts where to mount that across the front some how.

I started on the basic shape of the lower rack today. This shape will allow for a 5 gallon pail to set on either side of the seat, and a 12"x40" area across the back.

Are you going to support that in the back of the snowmobile somehow?  I can see putting a bucket full of fish in the back part of the rack and your bar would just break off.  Looks good otherwise!

Going to try and put a support back to the floor board, but it will be gusseted off the front side of the rack down to the rear suspension bolt that goes through the tunnel, and up to the up right thats going up to the auger rack if that makes any sense.

Looks great so far ;D. I was wondering why you didn't make the top bar of the rack one solid piece of pipe rather than cutting it into corner pieces ???  Was it to save weight or was it easier to make this way? Can't wait to see more ;D

Don't take this wrong, but you have a NICE RACK.... ::)   Nice design!  Does your sled have studs in the track to help for traction on the ice?  Also, they make a slip on wheel kit to slip on to your ski s that will make it so that you can drive your sled from a parking area that does not have snow on it over to the edge of the ice and then slip them off.  You can look at them at www.suregripdollies.co m   :)  Happy trails, D Hutt
