Over the years I've tried a lot of different lines.. I was a braid/fuse guy for a while, but recently I've determined that I like mono for almost all circumstances.. Here's why: talking about ice fishing specifically, I rarely fish in a shanty so I'm outside hole hoping. Braid ices up way too much where mono is much better. The main reason I think people use braid and certainly why I did was sensitivity.. I have found that for me, mono is just as sensitive as braid.. What I mean by that is that I can easily detect a walleye inhaling my jigging rap with mono.. It just doesn't make that much of a difference for me.. Plus, mono is much more forgiving with it's having some stretch and it seems to give the lure a smoother action..I use #7 jigging raps exclusively and it just seems to give it a smoother action.. I have never had any issues with breaking off fish. In fact I just landed a 43" northern on 8 pound mono yesterday.. Walleyes have been no problem.. And mono helps absorb those headshakes a big walleye will give you.. As to my specific setup, I've determined good old original stren to be my line of choice both hard and soft water.. It is just a great line.. I run 8# test stren original in lo-vis green with a swivel and 24" of seaguer 12# fluorocarbon for a leader... I fish Green Bay so walleyes get big here and this is the best system for me
