« on: Nov 24, 2013, 08:30 AM »
Went out to Prairie View lake this morning by Bennington, NE. Didnt get out too far but did punch a few holes. 2" of solid, crystal clear ice. Wont be long now.

That's is freaking awesome! How crazy would it be if the weather would hold like this and we could start fishing the lakes in South East Nebraska by the first week of December or earlier :o I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed also. Everybody that I know think I'm nuts wishing for this cold but they don't ice fish. Hope this year I meet some of the guys off the shanty so I have more people to fish with. So of anybody's looking for some company once we get safe ice let me know

Saw on facebook 2 guys from valentine fished the back side of the boardman at Merritt.  Reported 3-3.5 inches of ice yesterday.

Will try to post their pictures later today.

Devils punch bowl ??

Just about every state has a "Devil's Punch Bowl" or two - typically a low-lying fairly small area.  In the case of Nebraska, it's one of the hundreds of small Sandhills lakes near the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge.

Long standing friendly joke amongst some ice fishermen, keen way of not telling the actual lake you were on.

The sand hills lakes around Valentine get hit pretty hard through the ice and once the word gets out about which lake is hot, the flocks of ice fisherman make their yearly migration to join the other flocks of fellow ice enthusiasts.  Doesnt take long and 2 trucks turn to 70+ on any given weekend/week day.

Devils punch bowl is the center of my ice fishing universe.  If I find a hot lake it is without fail either north, south, east, or west of there.  I won't fish it this trip.  It is better late ice.  Middle marsh lake is better on early ice.  I promise to send some pic texts to fish icer and he can post them here.  He said it was too cold to go this week.  So he gets to be tech support.
