will the ice be safe to drive on?
« on: Nov 20, 2013, 03:16 PM »
hello everyone,

Some friends and I are going to be ice fishing Winnie, Red Lake, Round, and maybe Low.  Will there be enough ice to drive on Dec.26-31.  We are coming up from Indiana and my friends fished up there last year, but in jan. and they drove on the ice.  Do you guys think the full sized truck will be ok or should I bring a 4wheeler to pull the shanty?

It all depends.  Red Lake is usually the first big lake in the state to get good ice.  I was fishing out there with a wheeler before Christmas last year.  Fished LOW with my truck be the 7th of Jan.

Thanks Dana.  I may hit you up here and there for the ice conditions.

I bet my last dollar you will have absolutely no problem driving on ice by than. Email me when it gets closer to that date. I have family that lives near Winnie that can check for me.

If I remember right I drove out last year on Red on the 17th with a 1/2 ton truck. Had about 14 inches out a few hundred yards in the 9 foot range. I went out to about 13 ft and the ice was a tad thinner. Average years I usually am driving out by Xmas time for sure.

Hi,
You might want to bring at least 1 wheeler along just in case. i've fished early & late on Red when they won't allow anything larger than a wheeler. you can hook up your trailer to it & bring out all your fishing equipment & 1-2 guys at a time. I'd hate to drive that far w/o a plan B.
