Carbon Monoxide levels in Shanty?
« on: Nov 23, 2005, 09:46 PM »
Like a lot of guys, I use a propane lantern to heat my Clam ice shanty when it's really cold.  I always open one of the windows for a little ventilation.  My Son and I have never had a problem, but my Wife is concerned about the Carbon Monoxide levels.  I suspect it's safe, but don't have any hard data to ease her mind.  Does anyone know for sure if a lantern in the shanty will raise CO levels enough to be dangerous?

Personally Everyone should have a CO meter esp if heating with propane and a smoke detector I know I do!  The smoke detector if I plan on sleeping in the shack I got some weird readings last year in my fold up shack that I didn't expect!  High CO  and Low oxygen!  MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LOTS OF Ventilation! I always have my co detector with me!  part of the Ice shack equipment  I checked my readings that day with a 4 gas professional meter  I use for work (thats why I know I had low oxygen levels)   Be careful! 40 bucks for a co meter with a digital readout is cheap compaired to a life   ESP if you bring the kids  and or grandkids! or if you want to see the grandkids if you don't have em yet  2005 picture   detector  at head level   My choice to put it there cause thats in my breathing zone

Great advice and even better picture!!!
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

almost feel should be a main topic sorry feel too strongly about it lost a buddy last fishing season to an ice shack fire / co poisoning
also please dont forget a fire extiguisher!  This may seem overboard all this   but it is something I believe in soooo very strongly   seen too much loss of life and property that could have been avoided
