What jigs should I buy?
« on: Sep 02, 2013, 10:13 PM »
I want to try a few new jigs this year and am unsure of what to get. If I would spend, let's say, $50 on jigs, what do you guys think I should buy? Also, what color, size, and weight should I get of the jigs? I'm pretty much looking to "make myself" a beginner ice fishing kit. I am thinking that you guys may have a little fun. I guess that you can think of it as if you could only have $50 worth of jigs what would you have to have!

If I was only gonna have 50$ worth of jigs I'd have a couple forage minnow spoons, buckshot spoons, swedish pimples, ratsos, rat-finkees, gill pills, diamond jigs, and to top it all off jiggin raps and darters. First rule of tackle collection, don't worry about a budget, better to have it and not need it than want it and not have it!!

well a lot of it depends on what you are planning on jigging for.  I wouldn't buy the same jigs for walleye as I would for bluegills.  You can buy some pre-made kits from Custom Jigs and Spins that will give you a good box as well as a number of jigs for roughly that $50 price range.

If your talking pan fish, a Hali is a must and I prefer the Perch Glow. I've caught just about everything on the Hali, Bluegill, Crappie, Bullhead, Rainbow Trout, Pickerel, Walleye... Then CJ&S Diamond jig in Red Glow. These two are my go-to jigs every time I hit the ice. Beyond that my list can get crazy, long and expensive...

For walleyes, there's  nothing better on my home waters than a Northland buckshot rattlespoon. My all time favorite

I'm a big fan of Jammin Jigs, and for $50, you could amass quite a collection from them, just read the descriptions for what they are recommended for, and I highly recommend their bobber fry for blue gills. Especially in glow red.

As all ready stated it really depends what you are going to be targeting. For panfish i would go small fiskas like 3mm. Whatever you get i would say tungsten is worth the extra money. Walleye never caught a walleye on a buckshot but have had success with rapala jigging raps. also got them a jig head and minnow much like you would use in summer. For lake trout we use white tube jigs or the jigging raps.

I am looking at mainly panfish jigs. I was looking at Hali jigs, and am wondering where I could get them the cheapest. Also, Jammin Jigs looks awesome. Has anyone gotten the 40 piece grab bag? Also, I have been looking at fiskas, diamond jigs, and ratsos, but I am not really sure what are decent prices on everything.

I would suggest you get some Marmooskas  which are made by HT in size 10 and as for colors I would get pink/white, orange/green, two tone green, and yellow/green.  I would also get some Sweedish Pimples in the smaller size as for colors silver/green strip and silver/orange stripe.  Some 3/16 ounce (also goes by 25mm) Hali jigs in yellow perch, glow perch, green glow perch, yellow/ red glow perch, and white/ blue glow.  Northland Forage Minnow in size 8 in super glo perch, super glo redfish, and super glo chub.  I would also highly recommend you tip all these jigs with live wax worms.  There are lots of other jigs but these will get you off to a good start.

Hi WolfPack1, besides the mentioned jigs above, I feel that Reelbait tackle company also has some good ones to try. :)

My fave from them are the flasher jigs. They come in various colors and sizes and are great when rigged with real bait or soft plastics.

The prototype fergi spoons & prototype spoons would work as well. Neat photo patterns on them. @)

Nice basic start but don't see any Tungsten. 3mm (for a start) from yourbobbersdown or sportsmensdirect will add greatly to your versatility. Tungstens will get you back down there faster and you can show a much smaller presentation at the same time. Maybe some Trout Jigs (fly tying) from Cabelas in Gold, Silver and plain are useful to carry, bending the Aberdeen hook up or down can offer some nice looks, especially with plastics

You won't be disappointed with the Neon Bobber Fry. I love those jigs. Lost one a couple years back. This year I am going to replace it and then some. I just put together this years order. Will probably place it in a couple of weeks.

Well, I guess I should give a little bit of an update.  I got three Lindy Rattlin' Flyers (1/16oz) at Walmart for $3.50 a piece, which I thought was pretty decent.  I am trying to find the other colors, mainly red and purple smelt.  I am having a hard time finding Hali's (I am also unsure of exactly the kind to get), and am looking into buying some 3mm fiskas from yourbobbersdown.com but I am unsure of what colors I should try.  This is kind of off topic, but I picked up a like new StrikeMaster LazerMag 8" (drilled less than 20 holes, and you can't even tell that its been used) for $275.  I figured it was a decent enough of a deal and got it.
