Waterproofing bibs?
« on: Mar 25, 2013, 09:56 AM »
I have a nice pair of Carhartt bibs... not the cotton duck cloth, but nylon canvas material. Got then many years ago for a steal and they have been fantastic - warm and tough as nails...

Here is the issue:  the knees soak through  while kneeling to jig on slush or wet ice.... snow, not so much...

I could just spray on a silicone sealer and that might help, but I was wondering if there was some rubberized product for use on clothing???

I checked out the Plasti Dip website and it says nothing  about use on cloth.

If I could rubberize the knee area, these bibs would be absolutely perfect...

Buy a set of vinyl ice chaps. The padded knees are a nice bonus.

Get some GE Silicon 2 in the tube, and some mineral spirits.

Thin down the silicon *do it outdoors/garage, it will stink to heaven* with the spirits until it's thin enough to "paint", then paint it on the pants anywhere you want it to never breath/absorb water again.  Thinned down silicon will stick to EVERYTHING, remain flexible, and you will never get it out of the clothing...

You are warned -  ;D

I've got a couple sets of pants that still have silicon in them from 6 years ago, even with the wife washing them I can't get it out..

I believe there is a product called Camp Dry that will give your bibs some degree of waterproofing/repellingly.

Kiwi Camp Dry. Love the stuff, I use it on everything; my portable shelter, boots, gloves, bibs...

I have been told that Thompsons water seal deck sealer will seal them right up. I am gonna try it on a pair of hunting chaps I have that are made from the same stuff.

That might be a bad choice and ruin/weaken the fabric...it's mostly mineral spirits and paraffin oils.

I'd stick with the Camp Dry (great stuff) and have someone sew some waterproof knee pads, which you can buy, to the knee area. Just my idea.

I have similar ones by Work King, polyester shell with polyurethane coating and quilted lining.   They started leaking at the end of last season too.   I have cut up an old pair of Wetskins rain pants that I don't use anymore and am going to get my mom (the wife doesn't sew....) to sew patches on the knees.

Burt :)
