this came from the new implemented plan for lake lowell Refuge.... copied and pasted...

Lake Lowell is currently closed to boating from October 1 through April 14 to provide habitat for
wintering waterfowl, reduce disturbance from human-caused flushing events and improve public
safety. Under all action alternatives, the lake would be closed to all human access during those
months, including ice fishing and ice skating. For more information, please see the Ice Skating
Appropriate Use Determination in Appendix A, and the Fishing and Wildlife Observation,
Photography, Interpretation, and Environmental Education Compatibility Determinations in
Appendix B.

so looks like if we don't have ice on april 14 were screwed..... glad I got it out of the way this year, I am reading the proposal now....

Wow I'm going to be pissed if this is not ammended, I was under the impression that's why you had to stay 200 yds from the dam, so as not to disturb the wild life "Rich people building house's around the lake"

That would completely shut down waterfowl hunting around the lake, which isn't going to happen. Interesting...

it's ammended federally that a portion of a federal wildlife refuge is open too the public for hunting game, they actually had the first deer hunts on the refuge last year, do no matter what happens we will always be hunting something there....

Where did you find this proposal Matt. I was looking on the main site today and it hasn't been updated to the proposal.

"Can I fish from a boat? The lake is open to motorized boating between April 15 and September 30. Boat-launching facilities are available at the Lower Dam Recreation Area, Access No. 1, Access No. 7, and the east and west ends of the Upper Dam. Launching facilities are subject to closure due to low water levels. During the non-boating season, October 1 through April 14, human-powered boats may be used, but only in Fishing Areas A and B, 200 yards in front of the Upper and Lower Dams."

Anybody been to Lake Lowell since the cold snap? Any ice?

I really enjoyed ice fishing Lake Lowell last season. It is super close and the perch were fun.

I talked to the Chief this morning and he said when he was there last Sunday that it was just starting to freeze around the edges, but the rest of the lake was clear.

+1 on it being close, and even if you got only the first 200 yards from the dam, it was still great fishing, and not crowded. If your a praying man...pray for the inversion!

An email I received from the Deer Flat Refuge office today
Now let the praying for ice begin

Ice fishing is allowed at Lake Lowell. This winter, ice fishing will be allowed only 200 yards in front of the Upper and Lower Dams.

The Refuge is finalizing it's new Comprehensive Conservation Plan and plans to have that complete in spring 2014. Please be sure to check back with us or on the Refuge web site for any possible changes to ice fishing rules in the winter of 2014-15.

The lake is iced over. 1 guy fishing the lower dam. 3-4 inches of good black ice. The water level is down about 8 feet from what it was last winter.

Yep I talked too a guy at the Caldwell side Dam, 3-4 inches thick, fishing was slow for him, he was useing spikes,

I was by both dams this afternoon. No one fishing at the Caldwell dam, ice seemed a little sketchy there. Saw a couple guys on the ice at the Nampa side.

Other than being slippery, there is nothing sketchy about the ice. It was 8 inches thick and solid by the lower dam. The water is really low. No bites in almost 2 hours, and the deepest water we hit was only 5 feet deep. I am hoping the upper dam will have some deeper pockets.

I was out scouting it today, this is the west ramp 50' from shore. There is some very sketchy ice but this was beyond the piller in the clear stuff there is a solid 6".
