Homemade tip-ups. Who's doing them this year???
« on: Mar 11, 2013, 04:41 PM »
Ok folks, I'm hoping you avid Tip-up guys can help me out. I'm fairly inexperienced at Tip-up fishing having only been Ice fishing for 3 years now with less than 20 days on the ice under my belt. The majority of thise days have been spent jigging and I expect it will stay that way, however the last few weeks of our season here in western PA I've had alot of fun chasing flags. I have 3 sons who, Lord willing, will be doing more and more ice fishing with me in the coming years, as well as my father who ice fished with me for the first time this year. Fishing with that many people and only 5 tip-ups could get a little boring. A fellow shanty member and a really great guy 1Mofish gave me 7 of his older tip-ups and what a blessing that was!
But what I would like to do is build 10-15 tip ups this year before next season for me and my boys & my Dad to use, and then give away to someone who needs them the ones 1Mofish gave me.

So my questions are...
1) Where can I find plans on building home made tip-ups? (I know they are pretty simple and I could probably could figure it out without plans, but plans would be nice to have anyway.)
2) where can I purchase the hardware necessarry for building tip ups?
Thanks in advance for any info you can give me!
Tight lines & God bless!
John

I have made most of my tip ups.  Have made ones with flags and reels.  Have made a lot of tip overs. They are a couple of pieces of wood made into a cross with chalk line for the line.  Simple an d easy to make.  Can send pictures if you want. Pm me.

I know lawn rake tines make good springs for flags...
I remember Boy Scouts has a tip up project too, maybe plans online,

It's my fall project, I think I have the design down perfect, 2 sets of prototypes done now to make a set that will last for generations. Just ordered the wood, I'll be using a rare and exotic hardwood.

I am- a few years ago I cut down an oak tree and milled some rough boards with my chainsaw. This fall I'm going to run them through a planer and then the table saw. I'll stain them red mahogany. I not completely sure about the design though, I'm thinking of reverse engineering a Heritage tip-up and trying to improve it a little. What do you think?

I plan on doing at least one set of 5.
Nothing elaborate, just the simple upright and crosspiece type but, it will be cool using and seeing my boys using ones I built myself.

After pricing all of the hardware there isn't much of a cost savings, it really is a hobby. It would be pretty rewarding to see fish caught on tip-ups you made yourself!

There is mabe a cost saving, One of my prototypes i used oak and average of 17 dollars per tip-up. It was constructed extemely solid, not too heavy, super accurate, no wind flags, and looked real good. So you can build something that will work better store bought ones and last generations. This year I purposely bought extremely hard wood that can be machined. that will cost extra but I'm beyond satisfied with my oak ones. I don't know how to explain the design except it's foldable so all 3 beams are parallel, but when open the middle one is perpendicular, also the flag gets screwed in when set up. It's real nice. I'll post a pic when I get home from work. The bottom line is I don't see enough home-made tip-ups on the ice.

I haven't made any yet but have been giving it some serious thoughts.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to making any this year but I can see me making some in the future.  I'd make mine in the traditional cross style.

Ok here are the pics of last year's prototypes. They came out well and are very functional. This year's will be similar, just material and design improvements.

I sealed with polyurethane, but this year I'm going to try spar-urethane. I got the reels off ebay, there's a seller on there. Also this year I will be posting a complete build-up of a MUCH improved model. There will be tons of cool nifty engineering tricks on these. The main goal is reliability, consistency, wind-proof, and sensitive. I learned a lot in the 3 seasons of making these and this new set takes the cake!!!!

I'll post in steps as the weeks go on. First step obtain the reels, I get them off e-bay, I guess just search "tip-up spools" On earlier models I drilled the holes out a bit but this time I'm drilling them out and I orderd some brass tubing and using it to make bushings as you can see on the spool on the right.

Then obtain some hardwood planks like oak 3/4 inch thick and have them ripped into 3/4 inch strips. I chose purpleheart wood for this project. It's more expensive but twice as dense as oak. Cut 10 of them to 20" and 5 of them into 19.5 ". Drill your pivot holes, spindle holes, trigger rest holes, and use a 1/8" router to make your trigger slots.

Here's an upclose of the bottom of the trigger rest groves and lube port.

You can see I drilled a tiny hole right into the trigger assembly (aluminum tube) that the grease will flow into.

Top of the trigger by the flag latch, the trigger assembly epoxied in and secured. Note Purpleheart wood is twice as dense as oak so I use machine screws throughout.

Spool tensioner/drag system. These tip-ups take only one ounce of pressure to set off as opposed to 3-4 ounces like the commercial ones and is windproof by design.

Here is a set I made last year. All of the metal parts came from www.mcmaster.com, the spools came from www.fishingusa.com, and wood I got from home depot.
