Pan fish all year for me too in NEPA....I do enjoy the occasional bass fillet and TROPHY trout trolling Harveys Lake...but 9 times out of ten I'll take gills, calicos, and perch any day....by far the best eatting..and that's why I primarily fish...FOR FOOD! ;D. Its a mix between shore/docks and the boat..

Any fish in the pan is considered panfish Chez, hehe. But really, I fish for other fish but target panfish often in my boat as well, very fun and delicious.

I do. I really love panfishing. I start In march open water. Stop n fish trout. Then alternate between trout and panfish in may. June I do more panfishing. I don't have a boat n fish from shore. River panfishing is amazing in early June. Redbreasted sunfish in slow moving or Eddie areas. They have large mouths and will slam baits anywhere near by. They are painted by hand of God amazing spawning colors

We struggled to keep between 4" to 8" this winter so far here in PA this year !  Tight lines !  :)

I generally panfish hard during the winter on ice.  Then come spring I'm starting to perch fish from a boat (mostly in the Finger Lakes, Seneca and  Cayuga) and we'll start jigging for lake trout as the water starts to warm up too.  Then it's mostly smallmouth and lake trout during the summer, if I catch a perch or 5 they'll definitely end up the in the hot oil too.

We will prob be fishing at least to the 3 rd week in march...as long as heavy rain stays away...most of the lakes I fish have a good solid 12"+ ice..I don't see that going away anytime soon! March=Perch!!

I tend to follow the seasons myself...panfish in the ice through May, then its bass/muskie, then salmon/steelhead/lakers.  If it swims and I have a day off, I'm happy chasing it though.

There's almost always panfish gear in the boat regardless.  When things get real tough and slow, the panfish are always a good way to lift the spirits a bit.  We were fishing a muskie tournament on Chautauqua last season and after watching perch follow the baits back every cast, we couldn't help by tie on some panfish gear.  That day though, my buddy Dan managed to land a bluegill on a bulldawg and a perch on a double cowgirl lol.

Dont get me wrong Tackle , i love sittin on the ice as much as anyone on this site , its the perfect cure for cabin fever as hunting season is wrappin up and before my boat goes back in its slip at  Linesville Marina . So for me , once its ice out on Pymie my ice gear is mothballed till lakes are capped the following winter .  I went bear hunting in Maine last May and its beautiful up their ! water everywhere . Thinkin bout a icefishing road trip there next winter . If anyone has been up that way and can recomend a good lake pleases let me know , Thanks in advance . :)

since I started ice fishing *app 15 yrs ago or so.. I have started to target crappies more and more, in the spring (but it doesn;t usually take precedence over the green drake hatches of penns creek  .... I don't keep any trout anymore at all, cause they just don't compare to the panfish... I hit the lake in my kayak.. and I just got a fishing light I have been dying to use... just need to pick up a battery for it...but yeah I am hooked on crappie fishing in the spring outta the kayak.. as well as thru the ice.... and yes , I really wish we had a longer season..

When it comes to open water fishing for me it's either bluegills, perch, crappies or bullheads for the pan or throwing ridiculous oversized lures that are measured by the fraction of a pound attached to 90 lb test winch cable trying to catch muskies in the river. Im probably the worst Muskie fisherman of all time if you consider catches per hours spent casting said monstrosities but I deep fry a mean crappie filet!!

I do most of my panfishing in the spring from my boat.  I do like going with the kids from the shore cause when they get bored, the stone skipping begins.  mainly fish in bass tournaments through the summer and fall.

My buddie and I fish pan fish all year. Faylor, Walker, Howard, Little Buffalo and Rose Valley.
We heard that Rose Valley was going to be closed to pan fishing 3/15/13 to 4/30/13. Is there any truth to that?
Good Fishing, D. Deck
