Fisher at first light
« on: Feb 09, 2013, 09:49 AM »
Looked out the window of my shanty last weekend and saw this guy running across the lake. He looked big, even at almost 200 yards away!

Ill bet that you could pass that off tothe average joe as a MOUNTAIN LION.......

thats it its officially a mountain lion.

Let me add that you can feel the hair on your neck stand up when a half hour before light, a fisher starts climbing the tree you are in. They have never shown any hostility toward me but their curiosity is insatiable.

Man that would be nerve racking walking out after sunset. Heard wolves howling one nite this past October and only the northern lights we're the only lights out

How about tangling with a big 40inch fisher in a trap.

Ive had a couple encounters with them, i was fishing a deep pool on a local stream that had a big willow tree hanging out over the bank, there were a couple good sized browns rising on sulphurs so i was drifting a fly down through to them trying to entice one and from out of the tree a fisher dove into the hole almost ontop of my fly... About gave me a heart attack...I had no idea it was there

Back near the top of the page for the worthy photos BaitFish !Good, fast thinking and getting the action on the run.

I've seen fisher do a four-legged-leap in 18" of crusted snow, 12' ahead and 6' up a tree (measured).
It started the leap at a 45degree angle and crested about 18" from the tree.
With the four X four leap, all feet lifted in one moment, a most amazing feat.   :woot:    More at the link below.  ;)2

It's was pure luck that I even saw him. I was fishing in a Scout and I rarely look out the windows if I don't have tip ups out.
For some reason I looked out of one of the side vents and saw him going full tilt across Canadarago Lake. I grabbed my camera and flipped over the top and snapped a few quick shots, he never slowed down. Later in the day I was getting ready to leave and thought about walking out to look at his tracks and snap a pic.
It rates right up with the time when I was shore fishing for Browns and had a deer swim through my bobber lines. :o

I think that is a river otter, especially the second pic; they will live on lakes, fishers prefer dense conifers. ;) I see otters once in a while, if the ice is glare, they will run like that for a few steps, then slide on their belly, run/slide, again and again across the lake, its funny. ;D

I don't know, he never stopped running. I was thinking Otter when I first saw him but he never slid, stopped to nose around or really even slowed up. He just kept loping along like the devil was after him.
We do have both species locally.

Hit tracks look very Otter like.. But its very hard to tell a fisher and a otter apart at a long distance

that is not an otter----plus he saw it run---otters r good at swimming----i have seen both and that is not an otter--when an otter runs they are clumsy and when they run they slide in the snow---he said this thing did not break pace--plus if you look at the pics you clearly see---fisher
