My Chisel and Jiffy Might get Jealous!
« on: Feb 07, 2013, 04:44 AM »
After a successful day on the ice, I arrived home to find 2 boxes on my stairs... YES!! my new NILS is here!  ;D

About 5 pulls, and it was purring!! What mix do you guys run in yours? I spoke with a local shop and he said 50:1 is fine and the book says 25:1 to 50:1 So I gave it a sip of the premixed ethanol free 'REAL  GAS'. They said that fuel is good for around 2 years! and to store it away 'wet' and should be no issues.

I did manage a minute to stop by a local pond for a test hole today, and... WOW is it SHARP. Our ice is Clear and hard as concrete. Still a little fetch at the punch through , but whadayagonnado! Thing weighs 20 lbs, can grab it one handed and swing it all around!
Ordered the 42" blade, as standard is 48" I have an extension for the jiffy, but have only needed it 1 time in 25 yrs of running an auger.

Kinda like Xmas all aver again!

The propane sounds clean for sure... but, What does that Unit weigh?  ::) ( give ya a hint... almost DOUBLE!)
Also if the 1lb propane bottle is exposed for any amount of time ( i.e. a 9 mile snowmobile ride)  to the temps we have currently, THEY HAVE ALMOST NO BACK PRESSURE.  I have seen brand new bottles not be able to keep a small burner or lantern even lit when cold. This occurred on Millinocket  Lakes in below Zero temps, and we had a 'light' meal since we couldn't  use any propane items.
When Someone parks their Propane Jiffy next to The Nils in these temps, and the propane out preforms, i will be impressed. until then...  :icefish:

I do all types of fishing; but I am Die hard Ice angler.

I remember going from a chisel to an auger and it makes fishing a lot easier. Nice purchase. The guys with propane powered augers will get a pressure drop on low temps. Propane will have 0 pressure at -40 F as it will stay liquid at that temperature.
They were biting great out here an hour ago but........

Glad it finally arrived. I can't wait to see it. Good that you had a chance to try it out before this mess hits.

Congrats!

Congrats on the new Nils!

My buddy has one and runs noting but Amsoil in it and swears by the stuff. Says he mixes it 100:1. The oil is expensive but a quart at that mix lasts a very long time. You'll never look back. And put me in for $100 on you in that 5 hole challenge. Money in the bank baby.

Good luck with it.

i would run the first couple of tanks of gas a little richer. then after that  regular  mix. you want it to break in right so you can get many years of use. good luck @)
