Free Falling Tip
« on: Feb 05, 2013, 07:26 PM »
So you drop your transducer down  the hole and your screen is lit up with fish. We get so excited and drop our baits down the hole like a bomb. Then the screen goes blank. I like to do a slow fluttering descend. Try this on your next outing and experiment. When the fish are aggressive sometimes it doesn't matter. But its the shy fish that like not having a jig bounced on their head.

True that remember if you are using a spinning reel and you dump the jig down it will be spinning like a top.

I always slow the jig drop by feathering line on reel spool.

Caught the biggest fish of my life on a free falling 3/8 oz jig and minnow.  It quit falling.  I closed the bail.  Reeled up the slack.  And let him have it.  36" mac.

Watching the flasher and type of fish targeted is the key. Some fish are much spookier than others.

There is no need of using split-shots at time of jigging light ice lures. As split shots are fine for hard-water minnow and bobber fishing, but adding them to a free-falling ice lure completely alters the action. Because of the split shot falls faster and overwhelms the jig.
