Setup for eyes;
I like using 50lb test fire line with about 3' of 12 to 14lb mono leader with a light sinker and a #10 or #8 trebel. the line must be able to spool off the tipup with very little force.

Hook is on the bottom sinker is just large enough to get the bait to go to the bottom and placed at least a foot or more above the hook. If your fishing dead minows always make sure the minow hangs like its swiming upright.

I usually rig up a smelt with a quick strike rig and keep the smelt about 6" - 10" off the bottom. Good luck.
