Where have you been fishing?....are you using fresh bait....have you tried different bait or perch eyes(if you can catch them) or even setting all your tipups to different depths

Here's a possibility....... BAROMETRIC PRESSURE !!

We stopped in a bait shop at Schroon Lake some years ago with the intention of buying some bait and fishing the lake.  The bait shop owner told us "  I'd be glad to sell you bait, but to be perfectlly honest, THE BAROMETER IS FALLING FAST AND YOU'LL BE WASTING YOUR TIME ON THE LAKE TODAY "  Apparently, a Low or Falling Barometer turns off the fish bite !!  I don't know ...................... ....

Its the mid January slump it usually runs from the 19th to end of Jan.  That has been my observations over the years.

How can it be a mid season slump when most people have only been on the ice a few times and the fishing never even started off good.  Everyone has been complaining around here that the fishing sucks everywhere.

Just because there wasn't safe ice until later this year doesn't change the time of year, and this time of year is generally slower then others

It's not that fishing is so important, it's just that so many things in life are so much less important

I've had my kayak out a few times the past month and the bite was great and then started to slow once the ice started forming again - definitely seems like the mid-winter slump starting. Use smaller jigs and bait and a little less jigging action - they will hit.... they are still hungry, the fish just change their feeding patterns to smaller food sources....

depends on the fish and foodsources - big gills and crappie will be deeper in warmer water coming in to feed late - smaller ones will still hang around where they were - weeds and edges
pike are a cold water fish so they will be anywhere - especially in the shallows where the smaller fish are

yeah jon that day was dictated by having to bring my girlfriend to college at 8 but the other days i go out before the sun comes up and dont come back until its too dark to see your hand in front of your face. I am gonna try something different though i went and picked up a pack of size 10 and 14 hooks gonna try them out on some small minnows see if size is whats killing me

Unless you're using tiny baits (cup bait), there's no real need to go that small on hooks.  Hmmmm.  What pound test and length leaders?  Try putting all 5 tipups far apart and completely different locations.  Weeds, weedlines, deep water, shallow,

mix and match.  If you're doing all that and leaders are appropriate, it's probably a matter of keep on doing what you're doing.  It'll pick up sometime. :)  Oh and check the silly things, like make sure gas didn't spill on your tipups.

You know what's funny one year I had my old jiffy and it always dripped hee and there. I went for the longest time not catching anything then I bought a new hand auger and started slamming them again.
