If you have a flasher, 12-18 FOW along the creek channel was holding 'gills last week.  They may have moved a bit deeper since, but probably not much.

Straight out from the boat ramp there is trees. just to the left of them is a good spot for gills.

A city employee generally comes around between 10:00 and 10:30 PM and surveys the scene, and then locks up the gates for the parking/drive areas.  They're back open between 5:30 and 6:00 AM.  I don't know if they'd walk all the way out on the ice to find you or what, but you'd probably have a harder time getting home unless you parked off grounds and walked on.

I didn't hear anything about it either, but I wouldn't be surprised.  There is open water (less than 1000 square feet in each place, but open nonetheless) in two places and there are a few places where it's thinner than the rest.  I don't think it's any more dangerous than most other small-ish metro area reservoirs/lakes.

I fished it last night.  The bit was really slow.  We did a lot of moving and never found more than 5-5.5" of ice.  There are spots in the trees that are only 2".  Its a scary feeling to turn the auger a couple of times and pop through.  Be careful out there guys.

Went out on Walnut Creek this morning.  Nice, noisy ice.  Be careful out there, though, because the open water by the east parking lot jetty has gotten larger.  The area by the west fishing dock had skimmed over as well, making it potentially dangerous for those unfamiliar with this lake.
Otherwise, ice was a good 7" and felt sturdy.  The morning crappie bite was there, but they're getting a bit more finicky.  Gills were consistent all morning once there was daylight.  No monsters, but only a couple true dinks.  Fished 15-20 FOW.

As I drove past the lake this afternoon, I saw that the exact place that I fished (noted in the post above) on Saturday morning is now open water.  I have not been on the ice at Walnut today to check thickness, and I don't want to be a fear-monger (there might still be safe ice on the lake), but please be safe everybody!!!

I don't know how deeply things have frozen up with the sub-10 temps all day today, but just yesterday (Wednesday, January 30), there was a LOT of open water between the island and the dam (a lot of the lake), including areas where many/most who fish the lake generally fish.

Be careful out there anyone who's thinking about tomorrow or Saturday - there will likely be some places that are safe, but it would be wise to test/spud on the way out and on the way back.
