Anyone built an Ontario shanty?
« on: Jan 09, 2013, 07:41 PM »
Looking for tips, hints, ideas. I'm throwing one together this weekend, going with 4'x8'. Would 7' be too tall? I have the 2x4's, plywood, and some 2x6's for the skis. Picked up a 10mil heavy duty tarp and some good hinges. Anything else I should think about? Thanks everybody.

Also have any of you slept in one of these? Last year I slept in my Eskimo QF6, but I'm thinking this might be more comfortable for a couple nights.

I didn't know what they were so I looked it up. Pretty nice. Post pictures if you start building.

Well got started on it a bit late today so didn'tget as far as I'd wanted. I got the base made and the end walls cut and mounted on the hinges. No door or window cuts yet, the wood was a bit wet so it will be getting moved into a shed with the propane heat running to dryit out so I can paint it. It is 4' wide 8' long with 6.5' tall walls. For some reason I'm having trouble posting pics from flickr tonight.

In the 3rd photo the left wall is a bit bowed, I'm hoping to take that out of it with some brace. In the last one it is folded down.

you won't regret putting 2 more braces on it. it will stop the tarp from rattling as much and you can put a few hooks on them for hanging jacket and stuff. i built one years ago, wish i would have kept it. outside the weight it was a nice shelter.

Thanks Miller, I do plan on putting one brace at each top corner and then one on each side about half way down.

Nice start sincityredneck. Those shantys are excellent for moving around on the ice, and having your hitch already set up is a huge plus. Keep up the great work and the pics coming.  ;)

Did some more work on it this weekend, here goes. Sorry for the crappy pics. Painted in and out now, door and windows cut and installed. Stretch the tarp hopefully tomorrow. Old license plates for reflectors on the end walls and the tarp is reflective.

yes, I did thanks. I was able to get to saturday morning. fairly easy fix. spent most of yesterday and today out there.  It stays warm enough when the sun is hitting it.  One of my anchors ended up pulling out of the hole, thats what caused the issue

with it being painted black, may i recommend some reflectors or reflective tape. Easier for others to see at nite or heavy snow.

Sweet, looks good. Fun stuff huh? did you end up using liquid nail in the sandwich areas? Also if there is a tractor supply in your area they have "tarp tape" (green cardboard sleeve) to touch up any pin holes/tears in your tarp.  I've been using it and so far its the real deal.  It has held up to the cold, rain, and wind.  Hope things go well for you this weekend.  I'll be rockin Circus style!

Tarp tape

Here's a pic of the view I'm sure you can't wait to see!!

When I did mine I cut a couple extra pieces of PVC conduit just a tad longer than inside length of tarp. Which allowed them to bow out a bit and help keep tarp from flapping so much.

Lawnguy, I didn't liquid nail it but there's about 800-900 staples on her and a bunch of screws in the trim. Good tip with the tape.

Bait trap, good thinking bud.

I added 900 lashing D rings at 5' up on the four corners for tie downs.  I am afraid of parking the wheeler on it though, maybe I'll throw some planks on it for the wheeler to sit on.

When I built mine I built it solid 2' up on the sides then hindged the ends so that when folded I could store my gear inside while I towed it with the sled.  Worked pretty good, I ended up using canvas and painted it so that it'd be waterproof and a bit more tear resistant.

Well I went to 19 Mile Bay on Friday morning and set her up for the maiden trip, she did awesome. Right through the storm and not an issue, tarp held beautifully. I was very impressed with how sturdy this thing is.
