I was on Raquette Pond yesterday when I noticed a guy come onto the pond over by Water street who seemed to be just walking and not fishing.  He continued on straight towards the channel which flows under Underwood Bridge.  It's actually the Raquette River.  He looked like he was on skiis but turned out he was on snowshoes with ski poles. He just kept walking straight and I became concerned as we don't have good ice right now, and especially where the river flows.  He kept right on walking and actually zig-zagged across the channel numerous times and headed south toward Moody.  I couldn't believe it!  I fully expected him to be treading water at any second!  He continued on out of sight heading towards the bowling alley.  After I time, I saw him headed back towards me and was still zig-zagging across the channel!  Either this guys is completed nuts or is unaware of the danger he was putting himself in.  He finally got close enough to me that I approached him and asked him if he had bought his lottery ticket yet today.  He looked at me with a puzzled look while I explained to him that this was indeed his LUCKY day!  He didn't have a clue as to the danger he put himself in, and possibly others who may have to rescue him!  I told him I have lived here my whole life and have never walked across that channel even on years with good ice.....and this is not one of those years!  I am constantly amazed at how clueless some people are!

You can walk and stay on top of very thin ice with snow shoes..  BUT.. if you do go through, it is very hard swimming with them on..

Yeah, you are right about the snowshoes distributing your weiight on the ice, but they don't help when you are treading water and your  are in your throat!  Mike
