Author Topic: Got skunked on my first day out with the marcum (Read 1433 times)

Been waiting since last Wednesday to get my marcum and the mail, checking my tracking numbers about every 30 min and finally around noon today at work it says it was delivered and sitting on the porch.
Got home and went right to my favorite spot where incaught about 45 fish last weekend get all set up, put the marcum in the water and begin what I bought was going to be a awesome day. Joy was I wrong!!
Spent 3 hours moving to about 6 different spots tried all my jigs big and small and not a damn thing would bite. I think I marked a ton of fish but nothing would bite!!

Very frustrating night on the water.

Was fishing Schmit harbor in dubuque. Its down by the mystique casino. Problem is I down know of to many lakes in the area. Without driving a hour+

You could try lower sabula. Should be about a 40 minute drive. If you cant catch a fish there..... better hang it up.

After our trip Saturday, the 2 shacks using Marcums got 92 of the 110 caught the 2 guys using a FL-8 and 22 were not seeing as many and not catching as many due to not being able to spot the bottom huggers and draw them up....The guy with the 8 is a good stick and rare I out fish him let alone totaly anialate him... All 3 shacks were in an area the size of a 2 car garage with no structure to hold fish just piacking off roaming fish.... They were also using the same baits as the rest of us so the units were the only difference....Take it how you want but thats the only explination we can come up with....

Had the same thing happen up their. I would mark 3 different fish on the Marcum. Friend had an FL-8 right next to mine and his bottom would flicker a little but nothing showing a for sure fish. Wasn't that impressed with the difference until I seen that. Don't know about the newer units though.

One thing we noticed with a camera when I first went to a Marcum was the Vex ( in this test was a FL-20) always had a 6-12" dead spot near the bottom where the Marcum would pick up a jig within 1-2" off the bottom... Hence why your marcum showed distinct fish while there was maybe a flicker on the Vex...Many wont belive it or call me a liar but these arejust obsevations we have made.... Will gladly allow anyone to put their vex next to either of my Marcums to see for themselves...

Went and tried a new spot with a buddy and he brought his fish finder with him to. We got nothing!!! Damn fish were coming on the screen a whole bunch. Nothing would bite. 3 days in a row. Fished tonite 4 till 7 moved 5 times. Little frustrated.....

Where you fishing lower sabula? that place is full of shad, they come in and out all day.

I was using wax worms on about 5 different lures. Sorry don't know the names. Maybe they were just bait fish but we fished a lot of space tonite and couldn't find them

I was in Schmit harbor yesterday, all morning, and was skunked also. Not sure what's going on there...

Schmit harbor was very hot fishing last weekend but this week it slowed way down. Have u been out to mud lake area?

Not yet, heard Mud Lake had some keepers. Figured there would be just as much pressure there as anywhere else.

Plus Schmit was hot so I didn't bother. O'learys' lots of little ones.

put a camera down there and observe their behavior while changing presentations that is the easy way to dial them in.
