The owner should have put his name and address on the shanty. Its state law. This would tell you who it belongs too.

If it was a portable shanty, and not being left on the ice over night or permanently, you do not have to have your name/address on it in NY state. Though it would be a good idea in this case. Hope you find the owner or he finds you!

Not to change the subject, but what if no one comes forward to claim this gear?
Sure there's the "finders keepers" point of view.

Here's something to consider should the owner not be found, and the finder would like to "pay it forward":

Maybe see if there is an organization (vets comes to mind) that might be able to use the gear to get a few of our vets out and about to enjoy a pasttime they (fought for and) might never get to enjoy?

I know it sounds generic, but there may be someone that would love to try icefishing but hasn't got the $$ to get the gear.

Just a thought...

Not sure you will want to deal with the headache but maybe throw something out on craigslist for that area? Downside is you might get a lot of jerks calling
