Snow insulating the ice
« on: Dec 25, 2012, 11:36 AM »
Honestly how much will the snow affect the ice we have? Were suppose to get a big boy tomorrow night into thursday bring 12+ in most of new york...Even if the temps are in the single digits will it slow down the ice making process enough to keep us waiting?

yup   ....   it will slow things down for sure

except .... most of the local waters are still open so it won't hurt them a bit

Yeah, anywhere where ice has already been created will be insulated by the snow which will prevent any further ice development.  :-\

Also under all the weight of the snow it will cause the ice to sink and water to upwell through any cracks, holes, & thin spots creating inches of nasty slush.
Basically some larger bodies of water that are still open or will only have an inch or less will fair better than those with 3" or more.
depending on the weather next week, some larger lakes may actually not only catch, but surpass ice production on the typical early ice spots.

Pray for winds with that snow...blow it all off the ice
It;s funny what kind of weather we Ice Fisherman ask for.

well you put 12" of snow on any ice the ice making stops , and weight will cause water to make a slush layer  ,which it can soak into the ice and soften , unless it has changed in the last 45+ yrs. of fishing

Yeah snow is never good for making ice but it's mother nature and there isn't anything you can do about it so sit back, relax and enjoy Christmas.  If there are any lakes without ice the snow will help by lowering the water temp further.

One of the posts on here talked about a pond with 3 or 4 inches of ice  covered by snow that didn't make any additional ice overnight in 10 degree temps (something along these lines)

snow is not our friend  >:(

Seriously though best case is that the lakes are not iced over when this big snow comes Wed night, otherwise we have to hope that the snow either blows off if there is decent ice set up already or that the ice is real thin so the heavy snow will bust it all up and sink it so it can start all over from scratch.

temps in the teens with no wind tonight= skim ice on most lakes= not good with 10-16" coming tomorrow night.....let's hope that the lakes don't skim over tonight or that they break up with the wind coming with the snow......ice fishing can be so stressful sometimes  :'(

Temps in the upper 20's with wind and next to no ice on the lake=Not a lot of ice being made....At this point it is best that there is NO ice. Let it snow then COLD temps. The ice will come....just my .02 cents....hunts2long

It will be like 2 years ago on oneida.  we got 6" of ice then 2 ft of snow on top.  Then it was cold so we had no thaw to melt the lake down on top.  we had 2 ft of slush every where we went.  and ice making wasnt happening.  If we had those temps with a couple of thaws or not as much snow there would of been 2ft of ice when all said and done.

that sure was a tough one , there was about 20 days of fishing that was pretty quite out there , fishing was good but a little tough getting around , i made platforms by letting the water soak through the snow , so the next day i was high and dry, it was to bad we had the temps to make ice but it was to well insulated 10x your right we would have had lots of ice , wish Ontario would get cooled down  , shes a snow maker for sure
