I use small bobbers myself, tried buttons but they slid too much.

I might try the slipknot technique, but insteaad of a match I'll try a snap swivel painted orange. Seems less likely to catch on the ice.

I use a small bobber to mark the line.  Interesting idea on the buttons and suprised to see how many people use buttons.

A loop knot in the tip-up line. It works for me.

If you use too light an ice braid line,, buttons tend to slip too easy using 15.20lb test ice line than say 30 to 50 lb test ice lines.  I found this out for myself many years ago , Another downside with lighter braids is you will experience more tangles  when pulling line up on the ice on windy days or when the line is freezing fast around the hole. Larger diameter ice braids are much easier to manage and or untie knots much easier than smaller diameter.. Another good feature with heavier diameter is you can re wind a lot faster than thinner lines on your tipup spools.  I would go 40 to 50lb test..at least 50 yards per spool.. more if you plan on fishing deeper say 40 or 50 or more FOW. Always use fresh mono leader of preferred choice.. either learn the reverse albright knot  or a small steelhead barrel to join lines. Peace on earth and good will to all  IS fishermen ;D

Looks like I'm in the extreme minority. I use a Marcum.

I use a marcum on my initial set, but only then, it's rubber bands the rest of the time, that way I don't need to run out to flag and drag anything but a bag of smelt a long.
