What CC size to get?
« on: Dec 19, 2012, 04:35 PM »
I am sure this is asked a lot. But can someone help me figure out what CC size engine to get.

33cc
51cc
43cc
Etc.

What is good for what?
Lets say punch maybe 15 holes at the most in a trip. Mostly 5-6 a trip

these would be the questions i would like help on.

i think 8" is plenty. but i am not sure about the CC choice. is the basic 33cc ( Rapala, eskimo. misc.) going to work or am i going to curse my self in a season or two. wishing i went bigger.

I never plan on replacing mine, nothing else lighter or more reliable on the market, and it drills fast to, 41" in 20 seconds or less....

My Stingray is 33cc, and I  punch through 18" of ice in about 15 seconds, hole after hole. If ya wanna play swiss cheese, ya might wanna bump to the mid 50's range. One HP =15-17 cc's on a typically carbureted 4 stroke engine. Well tuned 2 cycles may bump a bit more. Remember, the gearbox and final drive makes a big difference, too.

I have a Eskimo Mako eight inch auger with a 43cc motor and never had any problems drilling through ice up to two feet thick.  I think the thing that matters more than the number of hole you drill is how thick is the ice and how fast do you want to drill the holes?

We get it your Nils is the best auger in the world. Just like your LX-7 is the best flasher.

Pretty sure my Strikemaster is just as reliable, if not more, then your Nils.

Well we dont know the reliability yet of the Solos, my Tanaka has 50 years backing it up....Tanakas are built to industrial specs unlike all the other motors used on others augers... Friendly wager on an auger race say first to punch 25 holes?

I know mines not fast. Never said it was. Reliability wise, all it takes is one little ding in your blade or if they get the slightest bit dull, and your day is done. I can bang my blade around all day and it can be as dull as you want and I can still drill a hole. I have the chipper style by the way.

The Tecumsehs were around for a long time, does that make them reliable?

Thats why no matter the brand you carry a spare set of blades, would be foolish not to....$20 every 5-6 years to me is a small price to pay to have a head resharpened over spending $50 a season replacing my old Strikemaster blades...

I was looking at a Nils in a store yesterday. Looks like a nice auger, but my Jiffy refuses to die. I don't know that I want to spend that much money so I can enter the ice auger races.  ;D ;)

If I was buying a new auger I'd have to take a look at the Strikemaster Honda, but I just bought a Husqvarna so I'm set...

Im looking at the tanaka power head, not the nils combo, just the power head, its a 32cc 1.6hp, thinking of running my 9"eskimo flighting on it, currently I am using a 3hp eskimo barracuda plus, I think its 85cc, its a beast but heavy, and it sounds awesome.

My friend says you can't have too much motor. That's what the throttle is for.

Just got a Jiffy 4g, 49cc 4-stroke.

I have been using hand augers exclusively for 15 years.  I want holes NOW!

With that in mind, I went with the 4g.  Only drilled 20 holes so far but it is very fast.  Nothing like the old jiffy 30's I've borrowed.

If you're going with power auger over hand, the difference from heaviest to lightest (exluding the smuginator nills) is not that significant considering the force you've been exerting with a hand auger for years.

I run jiffy 2hp stealth and I just picked up a  jiffy model 30 used. I ran a 2 hp strikemaster for a long time with 6 inch auger and drilled thousands with it. If your drilling 15 to 20 holes only, get whatever you want. If price is issue eskimo makes good auger. You can find many used ones out there for cheap and can sell for what you pay for it most of the time. 8 inch hole is all you need and I like the 6 for panfish . Good luck. BTW the Jiffy Stealth with tecumseh rips!

Larger engines work less to cut the same as a smaller one, but the drawback is more weight.  How much do you want to carry?  I like a larger engine that will last longer than a smaller one.  Think of a V8 vs a V4.  It also uses more fuel, if that matters with an auger...

JMHO

I have an old Jiffy 31 from 1988 or there abouts.  Its still going strong.  Slow but strong
