Last year I came here on leave and went snowmobiling up around strawberry during Christmas. If I remember correctly one of the lakes up there still was not frozen. Also there was only about 4 inches of snow on the trails, and some spots were bare. Jan maybe?? I hope ASAP, but have my doubts.

I don't fish the berry but past history via other forum intel shows Jan sometime for safe ice.  However, if we get a good running cold snap no wind possibly sooner but don't count on it for the berry...

Define seeing ice.  I'll bet you can see some ice on it most mornings right now.  Capped?  Usually about Christmas.  Fishable?  Usually the New Year.  People on some of the bays?  Usually by now.

Thanks ya'll.  I just called up there and they said 90% of the time they see it happen around Christmas.  Looks like your right, first of the year and we will probably be good to go.  We have a cold snap coming our way so hopefully it'll speed some things up.

I think if this cold snap stays we should have alot of places iced up by christmas. I have been on the hard deck between christmas and new years many times. Usually no more than 4-5 inches of ice though, but that works for me

Does the wind not allow the water to freeze? I guess it would make sense since the water is moving. Also I take it wind chill does not affect ice? In other words if it's 35 degrees out, but with the wind chill it's 25, no ice? I guess with the windchill, it's still 35 out, so I guess I just answered all of my own questions. Thanks.

Well the prob is that the wind blows and breaks the ice up by causing wakes and the such. Pretty much why bear lake is so difficult to get a nice hard deck on. Dang "W"

Here's and interesting read on wind effect on ice formation.  I believe but not a scientist, the smaller the body of water the less wind will impact ice formation...We're just glad Mama Natures hormonal therapy is hopefully kicking in and it stays this way for a couple weeks if not longer...can do without the wind though as I see it...anyhoo here's the read

I am planning on getting up there at the end of the week. If someone doesn't beat me to it I will post up conditions when I get back.  I hope it is completely capped because the wind is supposed to blow hard the next few days.

Thanks, I joined many years ago but haven't posted much.  Moved down here from Idaho and figured I would help contribute to this forum a little more. Can't wait to get on Huntington. Usually by this time of the year I have had 2-3 trips in.  So glad it is finally getting cold.
