Color me green with envy........... Here in SE WI we've got some skim ice in the bays but are likely to lose it this weekend with the forecasted warm front and showers.

If I can walk on by Christmas I'll count myself lucky.

Overnight lows in Syracuse, IN have been in the mid to upper twenties but that is changing for the worse as the week goes on.

Its -22c. Here now and we have already gotten more snow this year than last winter. The snowmobiles have over 100 miles on them already compared to 15 miles in total last winter. It hasn't gotten colder than -35 yet but that should change in the next week or two.

But that takes the fun out of using what we learned in Science Class years ago! Don't want to upset the teachers.

Now that's a laugh! When I was in 5th grade science class (lessee, that's 58 - 11 = 47 and 2012 - 47 =) ohhhh like 1965 we were told we HAD to learn metric because within a few years it would all be liters, meters, and Celsius.

So here's the calc for temp conversion:

Formula for conversion from celsius to fahrenheit:
F = ((9/5) * C) + 32

Formula for conversion from fahrenheit to celsius:
C = (5/9)*(F-32)

Even better than that ('cause I didn't listen much in science class in those days) is one of my favorite sites. Convert what ever you want....

http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/conversions.html

Anyway, -30C = -22F, still pretty frosty.......

I just remember zero c is +32 f .... and at around minus -40 c is about the same as minus -40 f.

Wind chill doesn't change the temperature.  It feels colder to exposed skin, but the temperature isn't affected by the wind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_chill

As a surface heats the air around it, an insulating boundary layer of warm air forms against the surface. Moving air disrupts the boundary layer, allowing for new, cooler air to replace the warm air against the surface. The faster the wind speed, the more readily the surface cools.

To the ambient temperature.  It doesn't lower the temperature.

To the ambient temperature.  It doesn't lower the temperature.

True but it does effect your comfort level when out fishing or changing a flat tire on the side of the road.
It also effects your safety with the risk of hypothermia and frostbite increased.
