south sandstone
« on: Nov 26, 2012, 10:00 PM »
I was thinking about going to south sandstone this ice season(if it ever freezes) and was wondering if I could get any advice for this lake. I know it has crappie, bass, pike, walleye and perch in it.
safe ice, tight lines and god bless!

I fish it with a few times a year , I Fish it when we go visit the in laws.It has a good population of perch from 8-11'', a ton of small hammer handle pike which have over populated the lake, very few crappie any more, with a small population of walleye. from Billings its a haul & gets colder than a SOB.Maybe Ill see you down there, we drive a silver dodge truck. Also the lake has dropped so much this year hopefully it doesn't winter kill.

I've seen some pics of the perch that come out of there and that's the main reason I want to go there. Want to take the brother somewere we can use live minnows and have a chance at a good variety of warmwater fish.

MT Redneck, if you're looking to make a trip over there this winter let me know, I'd also like to go over and check it out.   Here's hoping for some cold weather  :icefish:

I'm sure we could find a spot to park a camper... that's a pretty good poke from Billings and Columbus so making it a two day trip would be a good idea.

I figure that it would be like driving to west yellowstone from billings which is definitely a long day trip. Making a trip there an overnight trip would definitely make it a bit better. Hoping for some of the big perch that are in there , if it freezes up  :P

Can't imagine there's any ice on it yet.  Looking at the forcast for Baker it's going to be in the 50's for the rest of the week and this weekend.  But it is getting down in the 20's at night starting next week so who knows.  Anyone know the name of a sports shop or gas station in Baker that might have an Ice Report if a guy were to call?

No ice on Sandstone yet,the locals are pretty tite lipped with area lake reports, unless you make friends with some of them, the gas stations are absolutely no help.

thanks for the ice report. The night time temps are supposed to be in the low 30's all the way down to the teens according to the 10 day forcast I last herd for baker and plevna. Now if the daytime highs would get lower than the 40's there would be a little ice formation  ;)

Anyone been down that way? Thinking of making the trip next few days or early next week. Forecast has been pretty cold down there so I'm sure ice is good

We are going Jan 5-7TH I hope that  lake is still alive. My son & I fished a lake Sat. it was so low we could only find 5' of water. We did catch perch but they were skinny & almost pure white, the water was milky. So I'm hoping Sandstone is hanging in there
