How big is this fish
« on: Nov 26, 2012, 05:45 PM »
On the hunting forums there is always a thread that asks the question, how bis is this moose or is this moose legal to shoot; there's always someone who posts to the thread that the moose is sixty plus inches when in fact it is only 45. So I though i would start one here only with fish.

I was out fishing on my own this weekend when I caught this one. I did not have the tape measure with me. I took a quick pick them sent it swimming. I measured the two rivers rod and it is 33". Yes I know it is a 32" rod but when you measure it, it is longer.

the next day I caught this one and had two others on that seemed to be the same size  but lost them.

Yeah, I'd say 13 and 16 lbs. only because the other guys guessed low! ;)

Really? Those numbers seem about right to me!

Hey Dave, Seeing the rod you fish with. Catching and looking at lakers all the time. I would guess that fish weighs 17-18 pounds. My guess is assuming it has a girth of around 20 inches and a length of 36". They always seem bigger, always. That 39" I caught probably had a girth of 20" so its weight would be around 19.5 pounds.

I'm going to have to agree with Pat on this one somewhere inbetween 17 and 18lbs.  The one on the bottom is less than 15lbs for sure.  If it was me personally I would call them both 20lbs. and not show anybody the pictures. ;D

What is it about Iced and his ugly fish.  The top one looks like the one you caught on crosswinds a couple years ago.  I probably shouldn't open my mouth because I think I had the ugly fish of the weakend but still.

You think that fish is ugly then you should have seen the guy in the red Quick Fish on the other side of the lake.

It wasnt that ugly i think it was the glare from the over head light and the fog coming off the hole.

My guess as to the size is much larger than most of you, that is because I caught it. But it also has to  do with the length of the fishing rod., since it is 33" and there is still a few more inches to get to the tail then the tail is 5" long if not longer then the fish is 40" or more. Since the fish is vary fat it must have been well over 20lbs.

That's it the next step to the ice shanty floor is going to be a tape mesure.

Just a thought Dave. If that fish truly was 40" and had a girth of 24" then it could have weighed 28-29 pounds.

I am a god! (Read my post).

It would be good to have the actual length of your fishing pole.

It is just above the fish been there the whole time. It says that it is a 32 inch rod on the side but when I measured it it was 33.

The smaller fish was caught on an 38 inch rod but you can not see the whole;e rod any way so I did not think that it was that important.

I would say about 35" long, 20-22 inch girth, about 20 lbs.

I second that, we always take one out with us, it's a great tool and makes landing easier too. Plus less handling of the fish and easier on the hands on those oh so warm -30 days
