The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

the thing with the nils is its not like any other hand auger. the older ones you had to force down on it while cranking it. this understandably tires you out pretty quick. with the nils all you do is spin and it eats through ice

not even turning fast and it cut through pretty quick

One hole in 35 seconds? I can drill 3 or 4 in that time with my gas auger.

If i had the cash, id get the new electric Ion Auger. Im all about weight, and those are LITE!

A gas auger is the cheapest to buy and fuel up.  If you're looking for a good gas auger with a reasonable price check out the Eskimo Makos.  Lots of places have them on sale for $300 at most and some as cheap as around $250.

Where do you live (need to know for an idea of how thick your mid-season ice will be)
What do you mostly fish for (my recommendation will be different for a trout fisherman than a panfish guy)
Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

imo gas is best longer run time on 1 tank of fuel,no o my propane is froze or i forgot to charge my battery or the cold killed my battery,as long as you take care of your gas auger it will take care of you, mine is 14 tyears old still original spark plug fires couple pulls no matter what

X2 regular maintenance is required. I drain mine at the end of the season and run it dry. My friend does the same and his Jiffy is 25 Plus years old.

I think every person needs to take a look at their own situation. I decided on propane just recently because I've been smoked out one too many times while using a gas auger in a permanent house. In a perfect world I'd get an electric and auger 1 hole for every day of fishing. We don't live in a perfect world though, fish don't always like to be found and I like the option of being able to drill a ton of holes in a day with a propane auger instead of waiting for an electric to charge

That all depends on your situation.  Are you traveling a long ways over rough roads where your gas can spill.  Are you toting it all on your back where batteries weigh a ton? Are you augering through two feet of ice and drilling 20 holes where a hand auger (regardless of make) will wear you out?

On a side note, I had my Jiffy Pro4 propane auger left out in a driving icy snow at around 0 degrees for half the day and it still fired up when I wanted to move to a new location.  Propane doesn't freeze like people think.

I have used gas, hand, battery, and now propane.  For portability and thick ice go with gas.  For thinner ice go with hand.  If you have a sled then go with propane.  I have no reason to go back to anything else now that I have the Jiffy Pro4.
