New to the Great Falls Area and Ice Fishing
« on: Nov 09, 2012, 06:07 PM »
Hey all, The power auger and new Marcum Flasher is being delivered today.  I am new to the Great Falls Area and wondering where some good spots are to go to bring the kids for some quick perch action.  I hope to be fishing by mid to late Dec...  I hope.

Nothing real close.  Holter is probably the closest, at about a hour,  but has shady ice and freezes the latest.  Beaver Creek is a hall, over 100 miles, but would be a great place for kids, it'll be fishable before long if this keeps up and it's a lot of fun.  I was out there early December the last couple of years.

Pishkun west of Choteau has also been a good one for me for perch.

The perch are small but yet fun to catch on Pelican point pond out here by Cascade, I bring my son out here each winter and we always have a blast

Georgetown as soon as someone tells me there's 3" out there.  Should easily be the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Pishkun is nice.  Dave and I had an interesting day or two out there, especially the day 80 mph winds hit us out of nowhere.  I thought he was going to have to rope up to me so he wouldn't blow away.

As for my first trip, I usually don't start in until about the 20th of December or so depending on the ice locally.

Ha, I've heard that story a few times.  I always laugh, but I am sure it was in no way funny at the time.

We found my bucket the following summer, I still use it to this day.

Sounds like an adventure... How well did the shack hold up?

We had the shack anchored but not set up and thank god... It took  me a solid 10 minutes just to get 100 yds off the ice with the shelter and gear in tow.  It is funny now when we look back but I don't know that I have ever been that scared on the ice before.
